Hi John,
The France part that has been passed onto me is from my aunt who had info from John
Caldwell Cahoun's papers that we began in Piedmont Italy, then to the south of France,
then to the North of France (Huegonots) and some of us to Scotland. I'm glad my
Mother and Grandmother and the rest of the family are no longer alive to find out that the
coat of arms is falacious--especially the hand-painted one that was given to my Mother as
a wedding present.
The Aryeshire/Argyle part of our Caldwells are from a cousin who traveled through
Scotland, interviewing and gathering documents of our 'Scottishness.' She
assembled a Xeroxed book for all of us still living in this branch of the family, and we
update it for our offspring.
I shall look up the links you gave me so that I may be better informed.
Thank you,
Mary Mills
Hi Mary,
Sorry to be the bearer of "bad news", but there are a couple of things that
just aren't accurate.
First, Caldwells didn't come from France, they were never Muslim pirates,
Cromwell's grandmother (or mother) wasn't a Caldwell, and we're not related
to Queen Elizabeth.
There are five predominate versions of these myths and may be found at
http://CaldwellGenealogy.com/stories/myths.html
Second, there is no such thing as a "family crest" or "family coat of
arms"
which anyone can assume, or a whole family can use. Coats of arms belong to
individuals. For any person to have a right to a coat of arms they must
either have had it granted to them or be descended in the legitimate male
line from a person to whom arms were granted or confirmed in the past. You
can find more on that subject at
http://CaldwellGenealogy.com/coatofarms.html
Best Regards,
John Caldwell
Hello,
I have never looked for the Caldwell tartan (but do have our family's coat
of arms), because I remember being told we came under the Campbell clan.
My branch came from France to settle in Ayrshire, then went to Argyle
County, to a town kintry near Campbelltown near Glasgow. If there is a
Caldwell tartan (other than the good info you received from John
Caldwell), please let us know.
Good luck and thank you.
