Hello,
I have never looked for the Caldwell tartan (but do have our family's coat of arms),
because I remember being told we came under the Campbell clan. My branch came from France
to settle in Ayrshire, then went to Argyle County, to a town kintry near Campbelltown near
Glasgow. If there is a Caldwell tartan (other than the good info you received from John
Caldwell), please let us know.
Good luck and thank you.

Hi Jason,
Not being highlanders, Caldwells weren't really part of a clan. There's
that back-and-forth of banning clans, then after the war in about 1745,
anyone who was not a part of a clan were lumped into Stewart.
Now, if you go back as far as the Fitz-Allens and the first Stewart of
Scotland, you'll find that there is a high likelihood that there is a
Caldwell association. You can find more information about this by searching
the Discussion Forum at

As for tartans, if you're of a mind, you might consider the Stewart tartan.
An alternative might be the Paisley tartan as the potential "birthplace" of
Caldwell, and their presence on the ground around the time that McAlpin
ruled that all Scots take a surname. Then again, there is also some
evidence to suggest that some Caldwell lines may have relation to Clan
Hamilton.
I'm talking off the top of my head, so forgive me if my explanations are a
little loose.
In the end, you're pretty safe of you go with the Stewart or Paisley.
Best Regards,
John Caldwell

Subject: [CALDWELL] Good Day
Just wondering if anyone has any information about possible clan
affiliations for the Caldwells. Specifically I am looking for a Tartan
that could be associated with the Caldwell name.
