I am a descendent of the Caldwells of Spartanburg County. However my
particular branch of the Caldwells came directly from Northern Ireland to
South Carolina. From what I have been able to determine there also were a
sizeable group of Caldwells who migrated from Pennsylvania to Virginia to
South Carolina particularly to
Abbreviate county which is on the Georgia Border. This was originally
the Pendleton District of SC. Spartanburg is what was known as the Old
96th District. My great-grandfather was James Martin Caldwell who was
married to Hester Reid from Gowansville in Greenville county. Their
children were Elizabeth m. -
Waldrop, James Bryson m. Lillian - , Thomas Belton(my grandfather) m.
Elizabeth Allen, Ralph Martin m. Ruth -.
The children of Hester were James( never married), Hester, Ruth(m. Moody
Henderson) and John.
The children of James were Elizabeth(never married), John Edmund(m. Jean
-), Percy, Lillian( m. Richard Cecil), William(never married), James,
Frank C., and Ann.
The only child of Thomas was my mother Frances Elizabeth.
The children of Ralph were Martin and Nancy.
Nancy,Martin, Frank, and Ann are the only ones of that generation still
living to the best of my knowledge.Nancy lives in Spartanburg and her
married name is Carlyle. Martin when last I saw him two years ago lived
in Durham, NC. When i last saw Frank about 25 years ago he live in
Alexandria, Va. Ann last I knew lived in New York. I don' t know her
married name.
This particular group of Caldwells lived in Campobello in northern
Spartanburg County until sometime after 1900 when they moved to
Spartanburg.
