I spent the day yesterday once more searching for my husband's ancestors,
Alexander Caldwell and wife Margaret Looney, md. in 1778, Botetourt Co., VA.
(Internet resources are growing so fast that it pays to re-research our names
every couple of years.) Among the things I found through a Google search was the
posting to this list in July of this year, and I must urgently correct some
of the information included in it.
Margaret Looney and her husband, Alexander Caldwell, lived nearly all their
married life in Knox Co., TN, and had 11 children. Margaret Looney's husband,
Alexander Caldwell, died in Knox Co., TN, before June 15, 1830, when the
administration of Alexander's estate was granted to a son, John Caldwell, and
son-in-law, Jesse Galloway, husband of Nancy Caldwell. These are transcriptions of
some of the pertinent records. --

Robert, Sarah, and their son James are my husband's direct ancestors.
The April sessions 1832 of the Knox Co. Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions
considered a petition of some of heirs of Alexander Caldwell, deceased, to
divide a tract of land he owned at the time of his death. Margaret is widow. The
land had been granted to Alexander Caldwell by the State of NC on May 18,
1789. All 11 children were listed and two - James Caldwell and Polly Caldwell
Coupland, were deceased.
James had 6 children; the last 3 were Nancy, Rebecca and Polly.
Four of the heirs (Alexander Jr, Benjamin, Robert and Absolem) were awarded
an undivided 96 acres at their request.
John Caldwell, Elizabeth Caldwell Smith and Nancy Caldwell Gallaway, all of
Roane Co., TN, had already sold their interests to Samuel Williams of Knox Co.
John Williams received 20-1/2 acres, Benjamin Looney 25 acres, James Caldwell
heirs 29 acres, and William Copeland 24 acres.

Absalom CALDWELL ($82.50),

Alexander CALDWELL ($82.50),
Benjamin LOONEY ($73.25),
Jesse GALLAWAY ($73.25),
William COPELAND ($55.23), and others.
Note that two Benjamin LOONEYs received an heir's share unless Jane's husband
was recorded twice in error.
(George Smith md. dau. Elizabeth; William Copeland md. dau. Polly; neither
name is linked to a Caldwell in Knox Co., TN, marriage records.)
Therefore, it is impossible that the Alexander Caldwell in the July posting
that follows below was Margaret Looney's husband.
Alexander and Margaret had 11 children, not necessarily in this order --
1) Benjamin md. who?
2) Alexander md. who?
3) Margaret md. John Williams, May 26, 1808, Knox Co., TN
4) Robert md. Sarah Rhodes, March 1, 1810, Knox Co., TN, and moved to Greene
Co., MO, by 1839 where he d. in 1866
5) Absalom md. Hannah Hinds, Jan. 11, 1808, Knox Co., TN, and moved to
Jefferson Co., AL, around 1825 where he d. in 1863
6) John md. who? (possibly Polly Ann Riggle, May 19, 1818, Knox Co., TN)
7) Nancy md. Jesse Galloway, July 31, 1816, Knox Co., TN, and moved to Morgan
Co., IN, where she d. about 1836, then Jesse re-married
8) Jane "Jessie" md. cousin Benjamin Looney, March 18, 1821, Knox Co., TN,
and lived in Hawkins Co., TN
9) Elizabeth md. George Smith, where?
10) James md. who? (possibly Mary McCampbell, March 13, 1819, Knox Co., TN);
he had 6 children, and was dead by 1832
11) Polly (probably Mary "Polly") md. William Copeland, where?
Two additional records for Alexander Caldwell in Botetourt Co., VA --
Alexander Caldwell and Michael Looney (Margaret's brother?) are listed as
Privates in Captain Henry Pauling's Company of Volunteers of the Botetourt County
Regiment. --Revolutionary Soldiers, in Lewis Preston Summers, Annals of
Southwest Virginia, 1769-1800 (1929; Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co.,

If Margaret Looney's husband, Alexander Caldwell, was b. ca. 1757 as I
believe he was, he was just old enough to be included in his local militia in 1774.
I haven't yet updated my file online at WorldConnect with the new information
I found yesterday, but will do that later today. My page for Alexander
Caldwell, Margaret Looney's husband, is at

I long ago researched the Cub Creek Caldwells in Lunenburg Co. in
south-central VA and found that they are a separate group from the Caldwells in the
Craig's Creek area of Botetourt Co. (now Craig Co.) in west-central VA. So every
time I see a reference to the Cub Creek Caldwells I look to see if they have
been confused with the Craig's Creek Caldwells as I have found no connections
between the two groups. In addition, the famed Absalom Looney, father of
Margaret Looney Caldwell, lived in the Craig's Creek area, not the Cub Creek area.

Margaret through their son Robert

I have the following information on my 5th Great Grandfather Alexander
Caldwell. His granddaughter Elizabeth Caldwell married Rev John McDowell in Haywood
County, NC 1815. I found Alexander Caldwell listed in Abstracts of
Revolutionary War Pension Files Abstracted by Virgil D. White. Alexander Caldwell, R1589,
VA Line, soldier as born November 13, 1748 in Hanover County, VA, lived on
head of Holston River in Washington, County, Virginia at enlistment. After the
war soldier moved to Franklin County, Georgia and then moved to Haywood County
North Carolina and applied there for pension April 15, 1835. I beleive I am
correct that he is Elizabeth Caldwells grandfather as his age is the correct
timing and there is only one Alexander Caldwell that I have found listed anywhere
in Haywood County, NC including the documents of William McDowells estate.
William was the grandfather of Rev. John McDowell.
The following information was found in his pension files at the National
Archives:
Time Line of Alexander Caldwell
November 13, 1748 Alexander Caldwell was born in Hanover County, Virginia
where he spent his youth.
Appx. 1766-1776 Alexander lived, after he arrived at full age in Amelia,
Dinwiddie and Washington Counties, Virginia. I am assuming these approximate
dates.
June 1776 Alexander lived at the head of the Holston River in Washington
County and volunteered to serve under Captain John Campbell and Colonel Arthur
Campbell in the Virginia troops, guarded the frontiers from the invasion of the
Cherokee Indians and was engaged with the Indians at Long Island on the Holston
River; after which he hauled corn and ammunition from Botetourt County,
Virginia to the frontier, was in an expedition against a party of Tories and in a
skirmish at the head of New River; and served 6 1/2 months.
Other information:
According to marriage records, January 5, 1778 Alexander Caldwell and
Margaret Looney married in Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia. I have come to this
conclusion as both Alexander and Margaret were in Botetourt at this time and
there was no other Alexander Caldwell during these years in these areas of
Virginia according to all records that I have researched.
After 1778 Alexander is listed in pension records to have moved to Franklin
County, Georgia and later to Haywood County, NC.
Abt. 1809 Alexander moved to Haywood County, North Carolina.
April 15, 1835 Alexander Caldwell applied for a pension at age 87 in Haywood
County, NC.
There is a Henry and James Colwell in the 1820 Census for Buncombe Co. NC
Roll M33-80 Page 74
1830 Census
When Alexander Caldwell died, Holliman Battle was his guardian in Haywood Co.
NC. Also found records in Haywood County of Alexander and his son William
Lewis Caldwell & I believe that William may be the father of my Elizabeth
Caldwell McDowell.
Anymore information would be most appreciated.
