Hello Pollana,
I think you hit it. Environment, children learn what they see. Also there
is an heredity factor when it comes to depression which may be a chemical
imbalance as in Bi-Polar disorder also referred to as Manic-Depression.
There are others I'm sure, that cause one to be more predisposed genetically
to mood or personality disorders. Szhophrenia is another.
I have seen on genealogical site where some family names are involved in a
study to understand and track the genetic link to Manic-Depression. I find
this very interesting, kind of like a Nature vs. Nurture thing.
We do have choices about our behavior to a great degree, the first choice
being willing to accept the possibility of having a problem and then the
willingness to get help.
Grumpiness is therefore a signal that there is a problem, a red flag so to
speak. It is also a normal part of dealing with life on this planet earth
and all of the ups and downs that life brings. So when irritability becomes
unmanageable and goes beyond what is normal and healthy for that particular
individual, (subjectively) then it becomes a problem that needs addressed.
I enjoyed this discussion although I am not a professional.
Merry Christmas,
Elizabeth Caldwell

Well, as a counselor, I really work to oust the idea that
"having a hot
temper" or in this case "being grumpy" is an inherent personality trait.
Most often this sort of behavior is learned and represents "what works".
Some basic personality traits are present at birth, but grumpiness isn't
one
of them. No one has to be grumpy (exceptions for those who are
afflicted
by
depression, which might be interpreted by some as grumpiness.)
