My great grandfather, Charles Caldwell, was born in 1837 in Ireland, probably
County Donegal or Fermanagh. He came to America in 1853, according to a
census notation. He married in Ohio in 1862 to Bridget Greene from Cork or Limerick
and moved to Pennsylvania in 1863 and had the first of ten children, Dennis.
They stayed there until 1865 when the moved back to Ohio. I think they were in
or near Allegheny County. I cannot find Charles' parents or siblings but I
have a strong belief he had relatives in PA or he would not have moved there.
Whether he has any connection to your relatives I don't know but I could sure
use some help.
Charles was in the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 82 reg Co C or G in 1865,
but I have no records about that other than one sheet of basic information.
I have been reduced to collecting Caldwells born 10 years either side of
Charles' birthdate and trying to find Caldwells born about the time his parents
were. Futile, perhaps.
I've found no ship records and he was not naturalized although Bridget was.
No records for her either. They were Catholic and I've gone through their
church records to no avail other than finding they called her Brigeta. No birth
records for Dennis. Public records and newspaper records supposedly burned.
