This is mainly to Carmen Finley and others. I hope you are well and still active on these
boards. I've been reading your old postings with interest. Perhaps I can add to the
confusion. My interest in this is the Irvin/Irvine family of the Little Falling River in
Bedford county. Old John Irvin married Margaret Boyd and they are closely associated with
the Hat Creek Presbyterian Meeting House. Hat Creek is just a few miles from the now
Charlotte county line and this area was populated by many of the heirs of the original
founders of the Cub Creek Settlement. The old vanity histories claim the Hat Creek Church
was founded in 1742. I seriously doubt that. But that is another story. I have several
primary sources for one George Caldwell who seems to be associated with and neighbors to
my Abraham Irvine, son of John Irvin and Margaret Boyd. I can't list everything here
but I will mention a deed.
From Bedford county, Deed Book 1: "Deed from William Boyd of Prince Edward
county, to George Caldwell, 100 acres lying on Little Falling River in Bedford county, for
50 lbs. Land was originally granted to Jearns (sic?) McDavitt by patent and thence by
order of McDavitt's will, conveyed land to John McDavitt, thence by deed to William
Boyd." end quote. The McDavitts/McDavids were part of the Cub Creek settlement very
early in Lunenburg. My question is this. Could this William Boyd of Prince Edward county
be the 2nd husband of Sarah Caldwell, wife of the George Caldwell who died in 1742? Could
the George Caldwell of the Bedford deed be the son or grandson of the deceased George? I
have studied the Cub Creek Settlement much and I am as confused as everyone else. The old
"traditional" stories are filled with gaping holes and conflict. I have many
questions which can wait. I am hoping someone has some primary sources to clear some of
this up. Edwin Dean Irvin
