For anyone who has yet to discover the error in Bell's Old Free State, Volume 2, Page
184 regarding John Caldwell the Presbyterian Elder's son William's children.
Mr. Bell gives William Caldwell, son of John the Elder, as married to Jean and children
Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Martha, and Henry. Mr. Bell has mixed together 2 William
Caldwell's who were of majority who along with John the Elder Caldwell and David
Caldwell were the only Caldwell's who arrived early enough in the area to have their
initial deeds recorded in Brunswick County, the parent county of Lunenburg, then
Charlotte, where (Charlotte) the majority of the Caldwell settlement was located.
William, son of John the Elder, married Rebecca and had children Margaret, Martha, Sarah,
Rebecca, John (b1740), Samuel**, Eleanor, William Thomas, James, Elizabeth, and David, all
of whom except Samuel moved to Ninety-Six District South Carolina after their father's
death in 1761, along with their Uncle John (their father William's brother) and are
written about fairly extensively in George Leland Sumner's book titled Newberry County
South Carolina Historical and Genealogical.
The other William Caldwell in Lunenburg who arrived at the same time as John the Elder and
HIS son William is sometimes identified as John the Elder's brother, although this can
be brought into question from the fact that when he died, all of his children were under
aged; as opposed to John the Elder who had at least 3 adult sons - William, Thomas, and
David. This William died shortly after John the Elder in c Mar 1751, naming only his wife
Jean and his 2 oldest sons John and Thomas in his will. His other 3 children are
identified in the will of a Henry Caldwell. Henry Caldwell, Lunenburg will dated 27 April
1752, left his estate to be divided among brother William's children: Thomas, John,
Henry, Martha, and Jean. The children are further identified in Lunenburg Order Book
2.5A, page 69. "7 July 1752. Cumberland parish church wardens bind Thomas Caldwell,
John Caldwell, Martha Caldwell (orphans of William Caldwell miller) to Thomas
Daugherty" Then OB 5, page 23. "6 Dece!
mber 1757. Churchwardens of Cornwell Parish to bind out Henry Caldwell, orphan of William
Caldwell deceased to James Caldwell."
Then OB 8, page 75. " 6 July 1762. Charles Cupples appointed guardian of Jean
Caldwell, orphan of William Caldwell; Clement Read security."
Would appreciate any further information on the children of William Caldwell, miller of
Lunenburg County, VA
** See Lunenburg Order Book 2, page 210 . "3 October 1749. On his motion of William
Caldwell gentleman, ordered recording of misfortune (left ear bitten off by a horse) to
his son Samuel circa six years of age." Of the 2 William Caldwell's in Lunenburg
at the time, William son of John the Elder was referred to as "gentleman" while
the other William is referred to in the Order records as "miller".
