Message Board Post:
Did you resolve anything in your effort to detangle Hugh Caldwell's line? I also
struggled with a few men of this name -- it seems fairly common within the family. What I
have recorded begins with Hugh Caldwell with slight date variance -- Birth 1714 in
Ballycogan, Donegal, Ireland and Death 1769 in Loudoun, Virginia.
Lineage I have found for this Hugh is father William Caldwell 1662 - 1725 and mother
Elizabeth Porter 1677 - 1724. William's parents are John Caldwell 1630 - 1692 and
Mary Holmes 1635 - 1691.
Hugh's grandfather John had brother James with info I have of born 30 Nov 1634 in
Glendermott, Donegal, Ireland and died 13 February 1716 in Castle Caldwell, Co. Fermanagh,
Ireland. James and John (and other siblings William, Mary, Margaret, Joseph, Alexander)
had parents John Caldwell 1603 - 1639 and Mary Sweetenham 1605 - 1639. Everything I find
indicates James married Catherine Hume as stated in your post, and some other trees
indicate she can be traced back to the Homes or Humes mentioned in Magna Charta 1215. But
Hugh is not linking to Sir James as anything other than great uncle, from what I find.
Hugh's brother Samuel (b. July 18, 1708 in Donegal, Ireland; d. 1785 in Lancaster, PA;
m. Nancy Elizabeth Buchanan in 1729) then had a son Hugh, born 1730. And this Hugh,
nephew to the Hugh that I think you started with, then also had son Hugh (Jr) , and
grandson Hugh (III). And if that weren't enough, there was one more as Hugh Jr's
brother Alexander also named one of his sons Hugh.
As you and others mention, it is risky to just take what others have recorded, both in
Ancestry and out on the web (e.g., The Peerage -- what is the source date there?) I try
to have documents as evidence to backup the relationships I make, and you are welcome to
explore my public tree if you have not yet added the documents to your own files.
Denise (nee) Caldwell
