Robert Caldwell is one of 7 sons of John Caldwell who came to VA via Delaware and
Philadelphia when he received a land grant in 1740. I am a direct descendant of that
Robert Caldwell. John received permission from the British government in Williamsburg,
VA, to worship as Presbyterian rather than Church of England. When you visit the town of
Fincastle, VA, you can travel across Caldwell Mountain (named after Robert Caldwell) on
your trip to Newcastle in Craig County. Caldwell Mountain is now within the boundaries of
the Washington Jefferson National Forest.
John Caldwell was from Northern Ireland and is descended Caldwells who moved to Ireland
from Ayreshire, Scotland.
I am a direct descendant of Robert Caldwell and until the tender age of 13 months, lived
in Fincastle, until my parents relocated to the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, during
WWII.
I have 3 grown sons, one in Denver, one in Scottsdale, and one in Valley Forge, PA, and
between them, they have produced 5 grandsons and 3 granddaughters for me. So the family
name through my line won't die out for lack of male heirs.
Douglas Lee Caldwell, currently of Clearwater, FL, and soon to relocate to Denver, CO.
