Hi Dee. In response to "when your Robert Caldwell emigrated to the U.S. - date, ship
and from whence he came. Did he have children with him?"
My Answer. In my last reply you will note I have 2 dates- 1761 or 1764?
My Explanation for the 2 dates from my research. 1761 is the date given in the claims
tribunal transcript when Robert endeavoured to seek compensation for losing his farm etc
after joining Gen. Burgoyne at Skeensborough, fought in the Battle of Saratoga 1777,
imprisoned for 2 yrs and upon returning to his farm at Salem, Washington Co. NYS,was
threatened with death by a neighbour known as "Mad-dog" Moore. If it was 1761
only William is likely to have been born. I have no details at all on what ship they
travelled on and where they departed from.
1764 is when the Rev Clarke migrated to NYC with all his parishioners (a Robert C. is
named on the 'head of the household' list), departing from Newry, on the brig
"John" and planned to take up farmland around L.George in Upper NYS. This
exercise is known in history as "The Cahan (ie the combining of Cavan & Monaghan
Co.s names) Exodus". As the land was untenable, a majority of the group took up
allotted land on Turners Patent 1764 at White Creek/New Perth, Charlotte Co. now Salem,
Washington Co. NYS around 1765-66, as they stayed at Stillwater until they had partially
established their farmland with another "churchy" group of farmers from
Massachusetts. If 1764 is the date then William(b.1760) and John Todd (b.1763 and my
g/g/g/g.f)) would have been on board. James was born in 1765.
Hope you are able to understand to explanation and hence be of some assistance when you
visit Salt Lake City, which I am tremendously envious of you, being so far away in
Australia.
Regards
Bob C.
