EIFORT MAN LOSES LIFE UNDER TRAIN

James Caldwell, 61, of Eifort, killed by a train near his home early Sunday, was the
fourth cousin to meet tragic death in that community. Mr. Caldwell's body was found
about 1:30 a. m. by Miss Ruth Harrell, South Webster teacher and general store operator at
Eifort as she prepared to put her car in the garage. Lights of the auto fell on the body
on the track. Two cousins, Elmer and Henry Caldwell, lost their lives about two years ago
when a log cabin was burned near South Webster. Another cousin, Sam Caldwell, was killed
on the railway track near Webster about four years ago. Coroner Virgil Fowler returned a
verdict of accidental death in the latest of the series of tragedies. It is believed that

track. Residents of the Eifort community said that Mr. Caldwell had been rescued numerous
times from the track after falling asleep on the right of way, which he used to reach his
home only about 300 feet from the death scene. Friends said he had been in the Eifort
community for an hour or two before the accident, although earlier Saturday night it is
thought he had been to Oak Hill. The accident scene was abut 300 feet from the Lawrence
co. line, A. B. & O. train bound for Portsmouth was held up for two hours until an
investigation was made and the body removed from the right of way. Mr. Caldwell was a
clay worker with the Eastern Clay Products Co. of Lyra community. His wife died nine
years ago. Surviving are three daugh!
