I can contribute a little to this, although I am not intimately familiar with that
Caldwell line. First, Mary Dudgeon is often shown on
ancestry.com as born in Lunenburg
County, Virginia, in 1715. The Caldwell colony in Lunenberg did not exist until 1738, so
that is untrue. Second, that particular Caldwell line came to America from Antrim,
Ireland, in about 1727, landing in Delaware and then moving to Chestnut Level in Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania. In the group that arrived were John Caldwell and his wife Margaret
Phillips. They had a son named David who married Mary Dudgeon. He died in 1768 and his
wife and children moved to Kentucky. While I do not have personal knowledge of this, it
is pretty well documented. When John and Margaret came to America, they were accompanied
by three of his brothers-in-law, married to his sisters. Their last names were Moore,
Ritchey and Dudgeon (various spellings exist). John Dudgeon was married to Catherine
Caldwell and they had !
the daughter Mary who was born in 1715, making her a cousin to her husband. So, Mary and
David would have been born in Ireland and immigrated to the US in about 1727, then moved
to Cub Creek, Lunenburg, Virginia, in 1738. Their children were born between 1745 and
1768. That is really as far as I go with this line, but I have decent documentation for
the truth of that much.
