Taken from the Houston Telegraph, Texas, 25 January 1843
Death of Col. Caldwell
It is with feelings of deep regret and sorrow, that we announce the death of Col. Caldwell, the hero of the Salado. This event will be deplored by every patriot throughout the Republic; and especially by the settlers on the exposed frontier which he has so long defended. He has been to those settlers a tower of strength; and his humble cabin has been the rallying point to many bold and daring spirits, who, during the last eight or ten years, have withstood the inroads if Mexican or Indian foes. The testimonials of his worth and the estimation in which he was held by his fellow-citizens, will appear in the article which we publish below.
At a meeting of the citizens of the town of Gonzales, held at the Court House on the 29th day of December, 1842, to m ake suitable arrangements for the interment of the remains of Col. Matthew Caldwell, A. Kelso, Esq. was called to the Chair, and D. C. Van Derlip, Esq., appointed Secretary. The following resolutions were adopted as the sense of the meeting.
Resolved, That the important services which Col. Caldwell has rendered his country in the field, render it necessary and proper that his remains be interred with the honors of war.
Resolved, That a committee, to consist of Maj. V. Bennett, C. C. Cotley, A. Jones and A. Kelso, be appointed to make suitable arrangement for his funeral.
Resolved, Thad said committee be requested to appoint a suitable person to deliver an address at the grave, top procure a copy of the same and a brief obituary of the deceased, for publication.
Resolved, That C. C. Cotley be requested to take command of a company of Infantry, and also to act as a Marshal of the day; and that A. Jones, Esq., be requested to command a company of Artillery.
Resolved, That our fellow-citizens, generally, be invited to attend the funeral of the deceased, and march in procession under the direction of the Marshal.
Resolved, That the sympathies of this meeting be tendered tot he family and relatives of the deceased.
Resolved, That the Secretary of this meeting be requested to furnish the family of the deceased with a copy of these resolutions.
On motion the meeting adjourned.
A. Kelso, Chairmand
D. C. Van Derlip, Secetary

Manning must be the one listed as M. H. Caldwell. His siblings are Nora C. Caldwell, born 1869; T. Ervin Caldwell, born 1874; Mary, born 1877 and Phillip Brewton Caldwell, born 1877 and died April 16, 1950. Phillip is the only one that has children listed. He married Leave Annie Walters. Their children are P.M., C.E., F.B. and a daughter, unnamed who married L. E. Hayes. P.M. Caldwell married Mattie L. Unknown and his son is John Wilburn, born 1912; died 1964. He married Virginia Clark and their child is Perry Clyde Caldwell.
Let me know if you need anything else.
All of these are at some point in Spartanburg, SC, as am I.

Was this Peter Caldwell a brother to Charles William, George, David, Christena, Ellen, Janet, Annie, and Margaret?
Did he have children named William, David, Nettie, Addie, Mary, Hamilton and Varrie?
If so I may have information about his family.
His brother George would have been my great grandfather.

I found this photo in my grandmother's belongings. It is of her grandfather Samuel Elias Zeller, who was a roofer/tinsmith in Erie PA, and his coworker, Tom Caldwell. The back of the photo was labeled "1889." The front says "Work--Andover Ohio, Photographer 1st door south of Opera Block, Autumn of 1887."

Hey, if you happen to run across a Caldwell by the name of Zelberton Elvin Caldwell, drop me a line, would you? Absolutely no one can give me any information on him and I've been on this message board for years.
Thanks,
