I'm looking for the parents of my great-great grandfather, Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Caldwell, born on May 20, 1881 in AL (poss. Dadeville, Tallapoosa Co.). I've been unable to locate his date or place of death; all the Benjamin Caldwells I've come across don't match. He married on March 11, 1900 in Shelby Co., AL to Minnie Martha Ruth Baker, born on Apr. 18, 1885 in AL (poss. Marshall Co.) and died on Jan. 29, 1966 in Macon, Bibb Co., GA.
I've been unable to trace back past Benjamin because he was born between the 1880 and 1900 Censuses, and he was already married before the 1900 Census was taken. He and Minnie lived in Talladega Co., AL in the 1920 Census.
If anyone can help, it'd be most appreciated. I'll be happy to trade info. if wanted.

I have no connection to this family. This appeared in the Friday, Aug. 20, 1852 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette:
"ASSAULT BY A MANIAC. Mr. Caldwell, keeper of the Almshouse at Newburyport, was nearly choked to death last week by an insane person under his charge. Assistance reached him after he was senseless."

This John Caldwell is either my 5th or 6th great grandfather. Do you have their kids names? My grandfather on my mother's side is James Joseph. His father is Charles Mason, and his father is Andrew W. I have Andrew's father as Garland and Garland's father as George who marries Jane Winn. After George I can't make the connection to John and Margaret (Phillips) Caldwell. I have family pictures with their names written on the back. On Charles Mason Caldwell's photo I have written by a family member that Margaret Phillips was Andrew W.'s great great grandmother. Do you have any info that might help me. I am trying to join the DAR and am supposedly connected by 5 points. Most of my immediate relatives are gone.

I am the 8th generation of Caldwells. John and Mary Young Caldwell were my 5 great grand parents. They sailed from Larne, North Ireland in August of 1772 and were quaranteened on Sullivans Island for two months due to smallpox. You can see from Jean Stephenson's book "Scots Irish Migration 1970) where land was deeded to them "in the forks of the Tyger Rivers in Spartanburg, SC." You can also go on line and read from J.B.O. Landrum's book, "History of Spartanburg County" of 1900. There is evidence in that book that the children that came over on the same ship "James and Mary" (a small snow ship) were William and John. John got 'hacked to pieces' after the ride back to the community following the victory of Battle of Cowpens by a Tory Bloody Bill Cunningham. The other children were Andrew (1777-1854 my 4 great), Samuel, Hugh (the 3 great grand of Marshall Tucker Bands, Toy and Tommy Caldwell), Mary. There is a published book by Carroll Caldwell of Spartanburg that goes!
into much more. On William Caldwell's tombstone reads,
"Remember me as you pass by.
As you are now, so once was I.
As I am now, so you must be.
Prepare for death and follow me."
Many of the early Caldwells are buried in Nazareth Presbyterian Cemetary in Spartanburg. My 2 great grand father and mother were the last of mine to be buried there and the rest are at Fairforest Baptist Cemetary in Spartanburg.
