I'm still hoping someone can tell me who Rachel Caldwell's parent's could
have been? She would have been born in the 1780's or 90's. She was married to
George Wilson and had a son named William "Paddy" Wilson in Licking Co, Ohio
in 1812. Thanks for any information.

I was researching the family history of Navy LT James Rownd Caldwell,
a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, class of 1778, for whom two U.S. Navy
Destroyers were named (DD-69 and DD-605).
James was the son of Samuel Caldwell, who was married to Martha Rownd
(sister of Dr. Samuel Hopkins Rownd, Rev. War Soldier of Worchester
MD). James was born 1 November 1778 in Philadelphia, so his father
may have been born about 1740. There may be no descendents of that family.
James had a brother, David, who had a daughter who married a Dr.
Bradford of Philadelphia, and a sister named Mary. James had no
descendents; he was killed at Tripoli on 7 August 1804 while
commanding a captured gunboat, Number 9.
Mrs. John F Metcalf (nee Charlotte Meldrum Caldwell), sister of
Edmund Bell Caldwell and GGGrandneice of James, sponsored the first
Destroyer in San Francisco on 7/10/1917. Ann Caldwell b. abt 1921
(daughter of Edmund Bell Caldwell who m. Jean Ross of New Jersey?)
was the sponsor of DD 605, which was christened in San Francisco on
1/15/1942. She was the GGGGrandneice of James. Her father, Edmund was
also a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, class of 1917 and was a member of
the Trade Extension Division of The American Weekly in San Francisco.
The family lived in San Mateo CA. Edmund had an older brother, Henry
Bancroift Caldwell, who was with the Hawaiian Pineapple Company in
Lanai HI. He had two daughters, Mary Karen and Jean.
A relative of James, Charles H. Caldwell, is reported to have
enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Ulster County (Delaware?) in 1752 and
eventually was posted to Caswell County NC. His son, Charles Henry
Bromedge Caldwell m. Susan Blagger and he was also a U.S. Naval Officer.
James, his mother Martha Rownd, sister Mary and brother David are
reportedly mentioned in the April 1926 issue of the DAR magazine
under the title "Pennsylvanians In St. Memins Miniatures by Dolores B
Colquitt". There reportedly is also a record of the family in the
Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington.
The above data was obtained from the U.S. Naval History Center in
Washington D. C. I will be happy to send copies of whatever is of interest.

Does anyone have information on my Great Great Grandfather, William Caldwell who married Sarah Jane Beatty and probably lived in Butler County PA during the middle 1800's? He was the son of Dr. Joseph Caldwell who was married to Ann Smith. Joseph was probably a prominent medical doctor somewhere in Western PA in the early 1800's.

Thank You for the quick response. It makes me feel like some one cares.
My Casper Caldwell was born in PA. Enlisted in PA, Stationed in San Francisco. Shows up in San Francisco in 1860, Prv 1st class.
He was some what of a black sheep.
He went "AWAL" from the army in 1860. ( for 5 days) He was apprehended, court marshaled, served a year of hard labor, and was & branded with an "D" on his right hip. and then Piped out of the Corps.
He married a Mary Murphy in about 1867, San francisco. They show up in San Francisco in 1870 with two daughters, Lena , 2 yrs old and Johanna 1 year old..Johanna died in Sept of 1870.
By 1880 The family is living in Virginia City,
Lena is 12 years old
Joseph is 8 yrs old
Twins : Charles 5 yrs old
Nelly 5 yrs old
Mary has pneumonia, Casper is in jail for beating her. Mary dies one day after the 1880 census is taken.
The kids were all raised in Nevada opphanages. The girls in virginia City, and the boys in Nevada state Orphanage
Nelly was my grandmother
I would love to find out What happened to Joseph. Or who were Casper and Mary's parents .

Subject: [CALDWELL] Alan - The search is of more value...
Yes, better, Alan. All points well taken and I agree 100%. From all you
stated in this message, I will spend no more time looking for a connection
between your CALDWELLs and mine, but we can all keep an open mind to future
developments and discoveries.
Another list I subscribe to just had a major shake-up. One person found
evidence that the parents of one of our major ancestors were not the ones we
had assumed for many years! Everyone had to correct all of their GEDCOMs,
FGSs, etc. Hard to shift one's thinking about such a change after operating
under another premise for so long.
I know it must be frustrating for you to have run into the "firewall"
problems. I have been fortunate in that regard.
I'm glad you are not giving up!
I certainly understand about being busy, busy and limited on time to spend
on genealogy research. I guess most of us are in that situation. If I had
my "druthers", I would be doing the latter from dawn to dusk.
I had not thought about searching by time period, but it is a good
suggestion which I will keep in mind for some situations.
I do not yet have a GEDCOM, for two reasons: Mainly, I did not want to set
one up until I had sufficient reliable information so that I would be
comfortable sharing it with others. Secondly, I have not had the time to
devote to entering all of my information on the RootsMagic software I have.
I do well to keep up with email and online research. I print out pertinent
material and keep hard-copy files, since I had a computer crash once and do
not trust it completely. If I live long enough, I plan to begin doing that
soon.
Thanks for the kind and informative reply! It is easy to "misread" a person
online, so I thank you for clarifying your position for me. We don't know
if we don't ask, eh? =o)
Blessings!
Martha

Teri, you need to supply more information to get help. I don't know what country or US state or what century to look in. The Web is not likely to know Mary was an American Indian. (Although "politically correct" any one born in this country is a native to it. Indian is not offensive. I'm part Cherokee and I'm not offended. The Web will also not know their various residences or how they traveled.
If you can help us we will try to help you.
A place and/or date of birth or death, a date or place of marriage, even a rough date of where in time they existed.
Alan

There is a free DAR Patriot lookup on their website. You could then further your research from that point on...

Most libraries have a listing of those Patriots for which the DAR have
accepted . You should look through that and see if you can find John. If you can
then you write to the DAR in Washington DC(they have a web site) and request the
most recent LONG FORM. That gives you the most information. I believe it is
about $15. If you are fortunate enough to live in the DC area you can go and
use their library for a very nominal daily fee.

Bonnie, my great aunt Ellen Caldwell (Nellie) married a Frank Wilson but
that was a couple hundred years later. Sorry. My folks didn't get to the US
until the mid 1850s.

Blessings!
Martha

Herb, and other listers:
The DAR...hmmmm. This brings up an interesting question, which I do not
have the time to pursue just now.
It has been a long time since I worked on my CALDWELL line, but I think I
recall that the John C./B. CALDWELL (Abt 1750) m. Dicey MANN was a
Revolutionary War officer. If so, then the DAR should have his correct
name, parentage, birth date, etc., in their records and applications
submitted. I have never dealt with the DAR, but if any of you have,
perhaps you know how to contact the proper department within that
organization in order to find what data they have on this John _?_
CALDWELL. Anyone?
Martha
