I need an obituary for Newton D. Caldwell who is buried at Philadelphia
Cemetery which is in the Goodwater area of McCurtain Co., OK. He is my
gggrandfather. On the tombstone it says Newton P. Caldwell. I believe that
is WRONG!!! I believe his middle name is Dudley others say Douglas. I
would like to clear it up once and for all. I believe he was part indian as
he wore a pig tail which was cut off when he was buried. I have been told
that he was a JP (Justice of the Peace). If he was showing his indian
heritage by wearing the pigtail then he wouldn't have been used by white
people as a JP. So I am thinking that he was a JP to the indians. Can
anyone enlighten me on this? How can I find out about this? He was born
January 19, 1841 at Buck Range, Hempstead Co., AR and died December 30, 1918
at Idabel. He lived at Goodwater, McCurtain Co., OK.
Thanking you in advance for any help you can give me.
