I'm also looking into a Caldwell family in the western part of the county. There was a Hinton Cladwell who had a daughter Cliffie. The Hinton I'm looking at married as a second wife a Bessie Knight. Do you have anything on these peopel?
Sorry, Chuck, but this sounds almost challenging. Instead of us proving
that Cubb Creek John wasn't the first Caldwell in America, let's turn it
around and you prove he was.
Many of us have been diligently researching Caldwell for decades and are
happy to share. It is one thing to share research, it is quite another to
expect someone to do it for you.
With statements like Cubb Creek John being "widely accepted as the first
Caldwell in America", I would be suspect of any research you might offer.
What's next? Perhaps that we all descended from French Muslim Pirates, are
related to Queen Elizabeth and that Oliver Cromwell's grandmother was a
Caldwell?
Very sloppy work and very unbecoming of a Caldwell....

Just to add to the discussion of early Caldwells in America.
"It is well documented that William Caldwell arrived in America in 1718 and brought with him a letter from his minister in Dunboe. "The bearer William Caldwell, his wife Sarah Morrison with his children being designed to go to New England in America, these are therefore to testify they leave us without scandal, lived with us safely and unoffensively and may be admitted to church privileges, Given at Dunboe, April 19, 1718, J. Woodside, Minister." There was a large influx of Scotch-Irish into Barre, MA in 1718, which is laid out in Lincoln's History of Worcester, pg. 47."

Chuck, regretably you are quite uninformed! John Caldwell of Cub Creek, reported to have arrived in 1727 is most assuredly NOT the 1st Caldwell in America. In addition to Mass., there are records of earlier Caldwell's in Virginia as well. Perhaps other contributors are aware of earlier records of Caldwell's up and down the eastern seaboard -- well before the year 1727.

While searching (unsuccessfully) for my husband's immigrant CALDWELL ancestor I discovered that there was a John Caldwell in Ipswich, Massachusetts by 1654. He was made a freeman in 1677 and married Sarah Dillingham about 1657 (based on the birth of their eldest child). This John Caldwell died 28 Sep 1692 at Ipswich. My source is: Savage, James. A GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, 4 volumes (Boston 1860-1862; rpt. Baltimore 1965), vol. 1, page 328.

I am still looking for this information on Thomas and Sara. They are my maternal great-grandparents. Only other known information is that Thomas wrote on the marriage license that he was from Gladstone, MO. At this time that town is under the Lake of the Ozarks. Any information where I might find records of this town would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again. -- Carol Jean
