We haven't had any luck trying to find the parents of our Alexander Caldwell
in OH either. Maybe we will all have to try the DNA route to see which
families connect, if any!

My son is traveling to the British Isles this month. I am trying to find places still in existance where the Caldwell heritage started or at least is important in the Caldwell history. He is interested in heritage and archealogy sites.

Teresa-thanks for your info on the Philadelphia Caldwells. I do have the
permission
slip from John Caldwell's minister in County Tyrone, Parish of Ardstra, dated
1810
so I figure he came to the US shortly after that and settled in Phila.
Edward, who I
believe to be his grandson was born in Philadelphia and some connection with
Germantown in that area. Would be great if something-anything would come to
light on these Caldwells.

I am anxious to contact anyone who is descended from Mrs MEG Caldwell and any living descendants of the famous sculptor Hamilton MacCarthy (1847-1939) or anyone who can point me in the direction of such persons. Mrs Caldwell was Hamilton's daughter. I have compiled a detailed history of Hamilton's ancestors right back to Denis MacCarthy who was born about 1730 and married Ann Gorden (also spelt Gordon) in 1752. I also have much info on Ann's ancestry.
The above Hamilton MacCarthy was already a famous sculptor before he emigrated to Canada in 1885 and his career is well documented. He had 15 children - his sons included Coeur de Lion MacC (known as Leo, another sculptor) who married Florence Cameron; Hamilton Fordham MacC; Plantaganet AG MacC; Hector Dewhurst MacC; Ernest Stafford MacC (died 1952, widow was the former Effie Morris - they had a daughter (Christian name unknown) who became Mrs Paul Scott of Sarnia; and Richard Geoffrey HW MacCarthy. The first three sons were born in England, the others in Canada. Hamilton's daughters were Maude MacC (probably did not marry); Edith Ursula MacC (probably did not marry); Mrs JC Maxwell (her married name, of course - Christian names not known); Mrs MEG Caldwell, youngest daughter (again married name, Christian names not known); Mrs Withrew (married name, Christian names not known); Harriet Frances C. MacC (could have become Mrs Maxwell or Mrs Withrew).
Hamilton's grandchildren were Mrs. D. Browning-Couch, Miss Winona Withrew, Wilma Maxwell, Dalton Caldwell and Carlton Caldwell, and Helen Muir of Victoria, British Columbia, alive in 1996;
Great-grandson - Martin MacCarthy of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec;
Great-greatgranddaughter - Charlene or Sharleen MacCarthy of Ottawa.
I would love to exchange info with any interested descendants in this MacCarthy line - there are extant branches in England (I am the great-great-great-great Grandson of the Denis MacCarthy born c.1730), Australia, South Africa and of course Canada; other MacCarthys went to various British colonies. I believe the above mentioned Mrs Caldwell had an illuminated copy of a family tree tracing the family back to William the Conqueror - and it is recorded that a copy was deposited in the British Museum - I am in touch with the British Library to see if this can be located. Our own papers include an illuminated manuscript family tree going back several hundred years and I too have traced the lineage back to William the Conqueror and beyond. Naturally, I am keen to talk to anyone who therefore comes down from Mrs Caldwell and knows about her illuminated family tree.
Anyone who can help should contact me at dpjphillips(a)yahoo.co.uk

Carlene,
Thank you for both Census lookups. This helps to know they were still
alive. I see that JANE CALDWELL the oldest was not in either Census
though. I assume she could have worked outside the household. I have
her being born December 22, 1843.
I also notice that Loraine was not in the 1870 census but was in the
1860 Census. She also could have been working outside the home.
Do these Census' say the road or a more definite address? I know they
lived on the farm we lived on, but I would like to know if the girls were
nearby.
Could you look up JANE CALDWELL in the 1860 and 1870 Census? Also,
LORAINE CALDWELL in the 1870 Census. LORAINE was born Feb.2, 1845.

I have come to a dead end on my CALDWELL family. The furthest back I
have is: JAMES CALDWELL born June 12, 1815 in Allegany, Cattaraugus
County, NY, and died December 04, 1882 in Cattaraugus County, NY.
Cattaraugus County is in Western New York (close to the Pennsylvania
border). I am not positive about the birth location and I don't know any
way to prove it being that far back. From the 1880 Census, I found out
that his father was born in N.H. and his mother was born in Ma..
He married MARY HAYFORD January 22, 1843, daughter of JOHN HAYFORD and
LYDIA BROWN. She was born June 30, 1819 in Cattaraugus County, NY, and
died July 06, 1903. The property that we live on in Western New York,
was owned by James and I believe he bought it from an Ohio family in
November 1857. (I have a copy of the deed).
The other dead end I have on this family are his children. He had the
following children, which I have not been able to find anything more on:
Children of JAMES CALDWELL and MARY HAYFORD are:
JANE CALDWELL, b. December 22, 1843, Cattaraugus County, NY.
LORRAINE CALDWELL, b. February 02, 1845, Cattaraugus County,NY; d.
April 13, 1873.
MARY CALDWELL, b. September 23, 1846, Cattaraugus County; d. July 31,
1848.
JAMES B. CALDWELL, b. October 03, 1849, Cattaraugus County, NY; d.
October 26, 1884.
Census: August 22, 1850, Farmersville, NY 3 children
WELD CALDWELL, b. May 15, 1851, Cattaraugus County.
MARY A. CALDWELL, b. June 11, 1854, Cattaraugus County 1880 Census
says about 1859; d. November 28, 1877? Had married an ARCHIE ETSLER and
had a son born in Oct. 1875, and possibly a daughter EDNA ETSLER born in
1877.
HENRY W. CALDWELL, b. April 14, 1856, Farmersville, NY; d. December 02,
1934.
CARSON CALDWELL, b. August 03, 1858; d. July 28, 1895.
The only family line that I have anything on, is the Henry Caldwell
line. Henry owned the Farm we live on after James died. It was passed on
through the family and we own it now.
Can anyone look up this family in any of the following Census:
1840 - JAMES CALDWELL probably in Cattaraugus County in New York.
Hopefully with his family.
1860 - JAMES CALDWELL with spouse and any of the 7 children in
Farmersville, NY Cattaraugus County. Also, individual children if
possible.
1870 - JAMES CALDWELL with spouse and any of the individual children.
They could have traveled anywhere!!!!!
TIA,
Lois Lane

If you are related to Jonathan Caldwell then I can help you a little bit. I
don't think Jonathan Caldwell had any children. His parents were Joseph
Caldwell and Mary Jenkins and you are probably descended from them. I am
descended from Jonathan's brother, Joseph Caldwell. I have information on
Joseph Caldwell's son, Jabez Caldwell and some of his descendants. I'm not
sure where your family fits in but I'd be glad to help you if I can. If you
can get some dates and other family names (wives, children) that go with the
older names I'll see what I can do.
Sarah Elizabeth Caldwell (1813-1862) was my great-great grandmother. She
married Henry Davis, son of Judge Isaac Davis of Delaware. Her father was
Jabez Caldwell (1771-1831). Jabez Caldwell died while visiting Oak Hill, the
home of his son John in New Castle County, Delaware.

This happens in my search also ..name spelled Caldwell by some and my mother
always said and spelled it Colwell. Must be that southern accent with a
Kentucky flavor. Dixie

I am searching for information on the Caldwells of Appomattox. I know that John Caldwell was born in Ireland and came to America circa 1730 with his wife Jane and settled whre the present town of Appomattox is now located.
He may of been related to the John Caldwell who petitioned the governor of Va in 1739 from PA for permission of Presbyterians moving into Va to have religious liberty. This John Caldwell was also born in Ireland, came to PA in 1727 and died at Cub Creek and is buried there. He was the father of the Revolutionary War hero, Rev. James Caldwell and the grandfather of the firey SC senator, John Caldwell Calhoun.
I know John and Jane Caldwell had the following children but the order is unknown. 1. John II born 1768-1813 ( will probabted Campbell County, VA 1813-08-09 married Martha Fields. 2. Oliver m Campbell County, VA MB 1783-04-03 Isabella Cook. 3. George m ? his dau. Margaret m Bedford County, VA MB 1780-08-29 James Richardson. 4. Alexander m Campbell County, VA MB 1786- the widow, annie Laurie Shearer.
If anyone has information on this line please let me know.
Thanks,
