>From Chapter 1 of Alexander Lecky's 1905 book, "The Laggan and its
Presbyterianism we find the following description of the district know as the
LAGGAN:
"On looking at a map of the County Donegal, it will be seen that the
north-eastern part of the county, which is the most northerly part of
Ireland, is a peninsula washed on the eastern side by the waters of Lough
Foyle and on the western by Lough Swilly. This is Inishowen, a mountainous
and, to a large extent, a barren country. Immediately to the south of it is
a fertile and comparatively flat country, lying between the river Foyle and
the upper reaches of Lough Swilly, and extending in one direction from the
City of Derry to Stranorlar, and in another from Lifford to Letterkenny.
This is the district which in by-gone times was known under the name of THE
LAGGAN, and formed the most productive and desireable portion of the ancient
territory of Tyrconnell..."
This is also where many of my ancestors and yours came from; Defenders of
Derry during the great siege, the defining moment in Ulster Protestant
history. To an Ulsterman the Siege of Londonderry is what the War Between
the States is to an American. Shortly after this event great waves of
Derrymen left for America, first settling in Pennsylvania and then moving
down the Valley of Virginia and into the Carolinas. This genealogical
connection between the families of those who fought at Derry and those who
settled in Augusta/Rockbridge counties Virgina and the Settlement of the
Northwest Carolina Frontier (Carolina Cradle by Ramsey) eventually reaches a
climax on a little mountain in North Carolina on October 7, 1780. This is
the area of history that myself and fellow researcher John Giocoletti from
Florida have always wanted to explore in detail. This June we will be
travelling to Derry and Belfast for some extended research into the family
histories of those names that appear both in the records of the Laggan and at
King's Mountain.
Lecky's two books, "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism," and "In the Days of
the Laggan Presbytery," published in 1905 and 1908 Belfast, Davidson &
McCormack, North Gate Works, are a must for anyone wanting to discover their
Ulster roots. The books real value for the genealogist is in the Appendix
which is divided into several parts, the most important being the following:
"The following are the names of men who attended the meetings of the Laggan
Presbytery between the years 1672 and 1700, as ruling elders or as
commissioners, together with the names of the congregations which they
represented. They were doubtless the leading men in the districts in which
they lived..." These lists are by Parish and I will give a couple of
examples:
Taboyn: Matthew Lindsay, John Aikine, Alexander Houston, Robert Cowan,
Archibald Alexander, Robert Scott, Wm. Mackie, Wm. Bell, Robert M'Clellan,
Richard Armstrong, Richard Moore, John Kilgore, Wm. Inglis, John Gay, John
Harvey, David Paterson, George Brown, Robert Moore, James Marshall, John
Graham
Raphoe: Joseph Henderson, Edward Hervies, William Mills, Michael Henderson,
Robert Anderson, Patrick Bell, Robert Dick, Alexander Stuart, William Ramsay,
James Laird, Robert Walker, John M'Clure, Robert Gray, John Sproul
Londonderry: John Craig, William Cunningham, John Campsie, William Rodger,
James Fisher, Horace Kennedy, James Wilson, William Macky, James Lennox,
William Smith, John Cowan, Alexander Lecky, William Davidsson, James Wallace,
George Henderson, others
In addition to the ruling elders there is a list of people from the Hearth
Money rolls of 1665 by Parish and TOWNLAND which places a person in an area
sometimes as small as a few acres. These lists are important when comparing
names with the early landowners of Augusta county or the Baptismal records of
the the Rev. Craig at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church or the early
settlers of the Yadkin settlement in Rowan county, North Carolina.
I will be willing to furnish copies of these two books for a limited time to
researchers who want to explore their Ulster genealogy. Many of you
purchased copies of Professor Hagy's thesis, "Castle's Woods; Frontier
Virginia Settlement" and I have received numerous e-mails about the quality
of that document. I believe these two books by Lecky are superior in the
information contained and if you would like a copy please contact me
privately at cscunc(a)aol.com for the details.
Any information John and I discover specific to your surname will be posted
on the appropriate list after our return from Ireland. I will provide a list
of surnames that have "made the cut" so far, the requirements being that the
family is found in Derry and also found at King's Mountain. Any suggestions
for additional names will be considered as long as the request is
substantiated with a reasonable amount of documentation.
Regards,
Robert Cowan
525 Harrogate Rd.
Matthews, North Carolina 28105
Names on the list so far: Alexander, Anderson, Bell, Black, Blair, Brown,
Buchanan, Campbell, Cowan, Craig, Cunningham, Denniston, Edmondson, Finley,
Fleming, Gillespie, Graham, Hamilton, Houston, Irvin, Kilgore, King, Knox,
Lindsay, McClure, Maxwell, Moffatt, Montgomery, Moore, Ramsay, Robinson,
Russell, Scott, Steele, Stewart/Stuart, Thompson, Walker, Weir, Young
spellings may vary
John and I will stay in touch with the various lists as best we can. It will
not be possible to remain of all the surname lists all the time for obvious
reasons. Feel free to contact me at cscunc(a)aol.com if you have any
suggestions or questions. This may make a nice book one day.
The obituary section of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch indicates that SAMUEL

Chicago, IL. He had lived in IL, WI, MO and Kenya. At his birth, his

I have received many bounces on addresses that are with ISP's owned by
Voyager.net (which is currently blocking ALL ROOTSWEB Mail as SPAM). The
following ISP's are all owned by Voyager.net and are also blocking all
Rootsweb list mail:

@cfanet.com
@currantbun.com (maybe/maybe not)

@raex.com
@richnet.net
@hsonline.net
@dmci.net
@megsinet.net

@netdirect.net
@inil.com
There may be more that we do not know about yet. This has been discussed
widely on Listowners-L which is a list only for List Adminiatrators of
Rootsweb Mail Lists.
Another poor ISP is MSN.com which is notorious for failure of delivery and
bounces and I would encourage any of you with these to find another ISP or to
use a free web mail account at eudoramail.com or yahoo.com for your Rootsweb
mail.
This is an ongoing problem with MSN.com and reflects their poor service
capabilities in correcting this issue and includes the same problem with
their hotmail accounts.
This is my own opinion from what I have experienced on all of the lists that
I manage. It is, however up to you to complain to your ISP if you are
continuing to have problems remaining on Rootsweb Mail Lists that you
subscribed to.
Please DO NOT subscribe with these addresses since delivery of Rootsweb mail
is not guaranteed. There are of course several other ISP's who seem to also
be notorious for the same problems but this is one I see the most often.

I am pleased to announce that Rootsweb has created a new list at my request!
The name of the list is TOMBSTONES-L and I hope that you will join us and
help make this list grow and become active and helpful to all. I am not an
expert, but wanted to provide a forum for this topic and also to the related
topic of cemeteries in general. I hope this can be a fun and great learning
experience for all genealogists both seasoned and new.
Topic: is for the discussion of Tombstones and anything pertaining to them.
Discussion of types, materials used for tombstones past and present,
tombstone inscriptions, use of information for genealogy, preservation of old
tombstones & monuments, also to the related topic of cemeteries in general.
The list rules and guidelines can be found on the list home page.
Please let me know of any related web sites, to be added to the links listed

My grandmother Bertha Sallee, born March 31, 1902, is listed in the 1920 census as being the daughter of Henry Sallee but it doesn't give a wife. It shows him to be widowed. I can't find
a marriage license for Henry Sallee. I have also not found his birth in the census records yet. It shows him to be born in Missouri and at the time of the census he was 50 years old.
That would have made him born about 1870. If this connects us, please call me at 918-456-8150 in Tahlequah,OK. I feel good about this because I have cousins living in Tahlequah by the last name (Caldwell).>>

Hi Wendy,
I am Shelly and I live in Fl. but I am a San Franciscan. I have a ggranddfather named Cyrus Solon or Solon Cyrus. He was born in 1814 in Irdell, N.C. He isn't, of course, your Cyrus. But, since families used same names maybe he is an ancestor. As I read about it. Thousands of people migrated from the Mecklengurg N.CC. to all states west and south. My Cyrus is fuppose to be a son or Samuel Caldwell Born 1759 and Elizabeth

Hello List,
I am Deena Caldwell living in Pittsburg, California. I have been lurking for
a long time and now feel confident enough in my research to join in,
especially on this Brick Wall Roll Call.
My brick wall is my great-great grandfather/grandmother
- James Robert Caldwell (b. January 3, 1860 (Kentucky),
d. October 12, 1902) and Cinderella Jane Slaughter
(b. August 10, 1839 (Tennessee, possibly Nashville),
d. February 17, 1906). They were married on January 3, 1860 in either
Tennessee or Kentucky. I found them on the 1860 census in Osceola Township,
St. Clair County, Missouri. Later censuses have them located in Chalk Level
Township. On the 1900 census they are located in Osage Township, St. Clair,
MO. Their parents were all born in Kentucky per all of the censuses that I
have found them listed on.
They had 10 children:
Mary Elizabeth Caldwell b. Oct. 30, 1860 (Missouri)
d. Feb. 23, 1934
William Franklin Caldwell b. Jan. 28, 1863 (Missouri)
d. Sept. 17, 1933
Hattie Catherine Caldwell b. December 31, 1864
d. October 14, 1867
John Robert Caldwell b. Jan. 15, 1867 (Missouri)
d. March 31, 1909
Harvey Elmer Caldwell b. Feb. 4, 1869 (Missouri)
d. July 22, 1938
R. Lillian Caldwell b. May 9, 1871 (Missouri)
d. May 13, 1944 or Dec. 19, 1949
Richard Lake Caldwell b. October 5, 1873 (Missouri)
d. May 13, 1944 or Dec. 19, 1949
Raymond Burr Caldwell b. Feb. 20, 1876
(Osceola, St. Clair, MO)
d. August 27, 1941
(Cle Elum, Kittitas, WA)
m. Daisy Dean Allen
August 7, 1901
(Osceola, St. Clair, MO)
(these are my great grandparents)
Erle or Earle Caldwell b. April 12, 1879
Jesse J. Caldwell b. February 28, 1881
d. December 30, 1931
If anyone has any clues that would be helpful in my searched for James Robert
Caldwell and Cinderella Jane Slaughter, I would appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Deena J. Caldwell

Hi Dawn,
It's been a while since we've last talked. ;)
There was a Joseph Caldwell in Washington CO, IA about the same time;
CALDWELL, JOSEPH-Farmer, section 29, P. O. Adelphi. Was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, November 13, 1809, and when four years of age came with his parents to Athens county, Ohio. His principal avocation through life has been farming and while in Athens
county followed that business. In March, 1856, he came to this county and settled on his present homestead, which consists of 211 acres of well improved land. Since residing here he has held the office of township trustee, besides several others. Mr. Caldwell has been twice married. First, in Ohio, in 1834, to Miss Elma A. Laughlin, a native of Pennsylvania, who died in July, 1836, leaving one daughter, who has since died. His second marriage was also in Ohio, in 1837, to Miss Sarah D. Lottridge, of that State. They have one son and one daughter living: Edwin. and Mary A. (wife of J. L. Baker). His father was of Irish descent and was raised in county Tynne, Ireland. His mother was of English origin, but raised in New Jersey.
Don't know if that helps any. Maybe a brother, or something?
Good Luck!

Thanks, Georgia. I met Charlotte Brennan a while ago, and she was able to supply me with data on the line of one of their (Joseph/Jane) daughters.
