Kin,
It has be written/posted over the years that in 1649, Oliver Cromwell was
sent by the King of England to Ireland as Governor, Lord Lieutenant and
commander of the forces. Oliver's maternal grandmother was Ann of Cauldwell.
His cousins Joseph John Andrew David and Daniel Caldwell went with him.
They apparently had a wide level of activity there including aid for the
owner of Caldwell Castle. as well as aiding Cromwell in his areas of
responsibility.
Caldwells appear in records of the Presbyterian churchs in Ireland.
In 1653 Cromwell was elected President of England. "Some of the Caldwells
remained in Ireland and prospered there." But when Cromwell died and Charles
II was restored as King of England in 1660, "the Caldwell's power and
influence nearly ended." The 'commercial' activity from Ireland to England
became very slight and it was necessary for many Caldwells there to find a
new place to live.
One group of them centered on __John Caldwell b ___ Ireland; died Cubb Creek
Lunenburg Co. VA (now Charlotte Co.) whose wife was Margaret Phillips b__ d
before 1748__ . They and their children as well as her Phillips relatives,
landed at New Castle, Delaware 10 Dec 1727. They continued to Lancaster
County, PA where they settled for 10 to 12 years.
John's group were active Presbyterians and contacted the VA colony governor
to arrange for the opportunity to obtain two areas in VA where they could be
fully connected to their denomination and not pay taxes/tithes to the 'King's
Church'.
John helped organize Old Luenburg County, VA and in 1746 with his son William
is a member of its first county court.
One of the areas was along the valley of the Cub (Cubb) Creek and another was
a bit north west in a mountain area.
There were arguments and court events related to the Caldwells not supporting
the King's church. But it is said that the governor stood behind his
agreement. A few years later one of the Caldwells did pay VA a fee/fine of
1000(?) pounds of tobacco. (I remember that was the quantity, but I don't
have the record in hand.)
Included in the churches the Caldwells attended were some of the early
pastors of Presbyterian groups who aided the denomination's westward movement.
By the beginning of the Rev War, records regarding these Caldwell have been
seen regarding their homes and service in various locations including NC, SC
KY and NJ.
A town, Caldwell, NJ, is named for John and Margaret's son, General James
Caldwell who was a Presbyterian Minister, Chaplain and Commissary General;
(RW-NJ). He was killed by a Rev War sentry who argued with him. Also on
another occasion, while she was holding their baby, his wife was killed by a
stray bullet, assumed fired into their home, by English forces.
It has been felt that my ancestor Thomas cOldwell, who ca 1765 married
Delphia Ballard in VA and after the Rev War lived in the NC/TN area, was
connected to John and Margaret cAldwell but no one has been able to confirm
this. Delphia along with ancestors and other relatives, appears in VA area
Quaker records. I haven't seen Thomas or any other Ca(o)wells I can connect
to them in those records. Delphia's brother ___ Ballard also appears in a TN
Quaker record not far from where the Coldwells then lived. Thomas, Delphia
and their descendants appear in early Hawkins County TN records as well as
records of the New Providence Presbyterian Church in that area.
[Material above was typed by me, a fellow whose brain operation reduces any
accuracy you can expect from any item. Better than memory of things I have
seen in various records in VA and TN, is material from the two books I have
in hand,
"Caldwells and their Cousins of Virginia and S.E. Kentucky" (c) 1995 by
Archie Caldwell.
"The Generations of Thomas Coldwell & Delphia Ballard" (c) 2000 by Chris
Coldwell
I hope something appeared which accelerates your activity and you locate
things to confirm or correct it.
Jim (James Forga CALDWELL/COLDWELL)
My and Chris's ggrandfather and his grandfather spelled their names COLDWELL
but ggf's other son, my grandfather, shifted HIS spelling to CALDWELL,
If many of the settlers who migrated down the "Great Wagon Road" came with the BOONE-MORGAN-CALDWELL-MAXWELL-STROUD and other families, many of them were Quakers. I know at least one CALDWELL family line was of the Quaker Faith. CALDWELL/MC JUNKIN.
I once belonged to the mailto:QUAKER-L@rootsweb.com If all of us kept records like the Quakers, we wouldn't need to belong to family Lists.

Audrey,
Sounds like wonderful background material.

Hi Barb:
Yes, I too have been frustrated with Irish research. So little records. Our Caldwells left Ireland went to work in Scotland and stayed there, most of them. But we've never been able to find them in Ireland.

Subject: [CALDWELL-L] Research In Ireland/ Caldwells
Thus far I have not attempted to research in Ireland for information on the
Caldwell line. I am confused enough reseaching sources here in US!!
However, I should probably attempt to do so since they began there and it
might give me a picture of their lives before coming to America. How do I do
this? What are some good sites on-line to go to for information? I want
basic stuff, birth and marriage records, maybe land holdings...I just do not
know where to begin.
Can anyone help me with this?
I will be grateful for your help since I am a novice at this computer stuff!!

Hi
I suggest you start with yourself and chart what you know and then
look for the arrival. It is difficult finding ancestors in Ireland
in some periods.
Josephine
Hi
Where are you and what shipping are you interested in? I haven't
done much research into my CALDWELL or CALDWALL but think they
just stayed in Scotland. Here in QLD we have access you shipping
records which helped if they didn't pay their own way.

Does anyone have any info on Joseph Caldwell that was married to Jane McGrew?
This appears to be the same Joseph from a Will dated 1802: North Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland County, PA. as in the Will he referrences his daughter, Mary Donahy. He does not mention a spouse, so I am going to presume at this point that she proceeded him.
The name of Jane McGrew comes through decendents of William and Mary (Caldwell) Donahy by way of their daughter, Sarah Ann Donahy, the first wife of Samuel Clawson.
Any help with this Joseph? Would have been born c. 1735 - 1755/56
Thanks!

Subject: [CALDWELL-L] CALDWELLS AT CUB CREEK
In researching the Caldwell line at Cub Creek I have become curious about
something......Is there a source anywhere that lists the names of the
families that settled at Cub Creek?
I know of some of them as a name is periodically mentioned, but is there a
comprehensive list anywhere of MOST OR ALL of the families who settled there
with the Caldwells?
Since pioneers most generally traveled in groups for safety, and to have
help
clearing land etc...it would be helpful to know the names of families who
settled there. I am certain that some of them intermarried, continued the
trek to NC, SC, TN, and KY in groups of some of these same families.
Any help out there for me? A source I can refer to?
Your help will be appreciated.

Elizabeth,
"Cub Creek" refers to the "Caldwell Settlement" in Virginia. It was
originally part of BEVERLY MANNOR plantation which was then broken up into
different land parcels. I think the county is what is now known as CHARLOTTE
county...however, I am doing this from memory...my notes are not with me at
the moment. They also mention Lunnenburg County.....well, as you know county
names changed a lot then as they merged or separated...but VIRGINIA is at
least the correct state!!

Subject: ELLENDER CALDWELL
Looking for anything on this lost lady..Ellender, Eleanor, Nellie Caldwell b. ca 1780. Married James Livesay ca 1801 southwest Virginia, Lee or Wise County? Children b. Grayson County, Virginia. She died in Hancock County, TN.
This is all we know on Ellender..who were her sibling, her parents? Any help appreciated.

I just finished reading two books for research. They are :
THE SCOTCH IRISH by Leyburn
SCOTCH IRISH IN PA & ky bY BILLY(wILLIAM) KENNEDY
I though Leyburns book was very helpful...although somewhat dry at times. He
covers a lot of material which gives insight into the times and the people
called "Scotch-Irish"
Kennedy's book seemed to be a "rewritten" version of Leyburn's book...just
written less formally....but the same material over and over again. If I had
known that I would have only purchased the one by Leyburn.
Do any of you have other books you could suggest I read for research on
Caldwell family and their times? I am attempting to do some "book" research
at this point and need help knowing of sources to turn to.
I discovered you can often find books....used ones...at Amazon.com and not
spend quite as much for them. I still am searching for information on the
SHIPS THEY CAME OVER TO AMERICA ON....I am really curious as to the SIZE OF
THE SHIPS, WHAT THEY LOOKED LIKE, WHERE DID THEY LEAVE FROM (PORT) HOW LONG
THE TRIP TOOK THE COST ETC any books out there to help me with this?
Your help always sends me in another direction and moves me along my journey
of discovery...I appreciate the kindness of people thus far!!

iN RESEARCHING THE CALDWELL LINE, i NOTICED THAT THE CUNNINGHAM NAME IS
FREQUENTLY MENTIONED ALONG WITH CALDWELL ON DOCUMENTS IN WILL BOOKS, LAND
PURCHASES ETC. i THINK IT IS WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM AND MAYBE ANOTHER ONE WHICH
ARE MNETIONTIONED MOST OFTEN....USUALLY IN THE CUB CREEK AREA OF VA
Then later, a William Cunningham serves with Caldwell in the Revolution.
Supposedly there is a disagreement over payment or promotion of some kind and
Cunningham leaves that unit and becomes a Tory...later kills a Caldwell in
his front yard and burns down his home.
Wonder if this "bloody Bill" Cunningham is related to the earlier cunninghams
that seemed to be neighbors, maybe even friends, with the Cub Creek
Caldwells? Does anyone have anything further to add to this story? If they
were neighbors and friends...something must have gone terribly wrong for
"Bloody Bill" to have turned so completely on the family!! If any of you
have any source you can point me to, or more information on this connection,
I would really appreciate it. Potential for such an interesting story!

I am trying to find the parents of JOSEPH GORDON CALDWELLl
b.May 01,1880, possibly Ashe Co.NC.He married CORDELIA
CAROLINE REED July 12,1900 in Ashe Co. NC. d. 1965 Flatridge
VA. CORDELIA was born May 05, 1881, possibly NC or VA.
d.1951 Flatridge VA. I have a marriage certificate from
State of North Carolina, Ashe Co. Listing JOSEPH as JOSEPH
CALWELL, age 21, from Algiers, Resident of Crumpler. Mother
dead, father REANIE CALWELL.( spelling could be COLWELL ).
It list CORDELIA as CORDELA REED, age 19, of Algiers,
Resident of Algiers. Daughter of Eli Reed and Sary Reed,
both living.
I have confirmed ELI REED was born in Floyd Co.VA. and was
married to SARAH HUNGATE. Some sources of information list
ELI as ELI REID married to SARAH HUNGATE, But the children
of ELI REID are different than the children of ELI REED. I
am trying to locate the correct parents for JOSEPH GORDON
CALDWELL and CORDELIA CAROLINE REED, my grandparents.
I can give you correct children names if it will help.
I can be contacted at rjsalsbery(a)qwest.net
Thank You Bob Salsbery
