Ann, I am interested in any information you could locate for me concerning
one of my ancestors.
His name was William Philpot Curran Caldwell..often known simply as W.P.C.
Caldwell. WPC was born July 25, 1810 to parents Samuel Caldwell/ Ann Balch
of Logan County, KY.
WPC married Jane Jackson and they moved to Johnson County, MO bought a farm
in Warrensburg MO. He was a minister of the Missionary Baptist Church in the
Johnson County area of Missouri.
He was a tanner by trade and had a tannnery in Russelville, KY and was
considered "disapated" (probably a drinker) until he was 28 years old...then
married his wife who was Baptist and she converted him and he became a
minister.
I have been seraching for any personal information I could find on him for a
long long time. Any help you could give would be appreciated.
Thanking you in advance.

Subject: CALDWELL-D Digest V01 #25
A cousin sent me a copy of an Iowa Biography for Joseph Caldwell that was in
the Digest earlier this morning.... that had a statement about his (Joseph
Caldwell) great grandfather being in a ship wreck while coming to
America.....ending up in NY. This is a family story to our family....and I
would like to find out more about the person.
Thanks, Joy
I have a 10" x 31.5" photograph of Battery K 96th C.A.(AA), taken on 10 Nov
1941 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
E. M. Caldwell is in the picture
I would be glad to send a scan to interested persons.

My Caldwells are the Cub Creek Caldwell line and of course were strong
Presbyterians. However, one of the children of a family in KY ( a son) was
perhaps a heavy drinker and kind of wild. He met and married a woman who was
a Baptist and he converted to that faith and then became a Baptist minister,
moving to Missouri where he was a pastor of a small church there.
My grandparents were strong Baptist as were all of my Texas relatives
(mother's side of the family) so I was raised thinking we had always been
Baptists. I was really surprised when I learned we were Presbyterian...and
learned even more that the Presbyterians were very active in fighting Indians
and in the American Revolution!! Of course, as Scots-Irish they hated the
English so it made sense they were so active against the English in the
Revolution.

In a word - yes. I am from middle TN and am working on the Caldwell line
here and find that most were Baptist and some were even Baptist ministers,
while some of the Caldwell women married into Baptist 'preacher' families.
There are several denominations of Baptist in this area and most of these
people were from lesser known denominations than the largest and most well
known "Southern Baptist."
Most of the group from my lines were and are "General Baptist," often called
in our area - "foot washing" Baptist. This is not derogatory but quite the
reverse, because "I are one." Some were known as "Missionary Baptist", some
"Primitive Baptist" etc.
Most of these small churches were located in the very rural areas but,
nevertheless, in the early days, served as the center of spiritual and social
activity for the scattered community members. Many of these churches still
exist and still serve the same purposes. A good many of them have cemeteries
on the property and some of these are now quite large. They contain a wealth
of history and family information. I know of some here that contain five and
six or more generations of one family and the families they married into.
Along with the fine people who had the forethought to keep good records make
this a Mecca for family researchers. I am checking your request against my
database and will contact you with what information I have.
Keep Searching
Ann Carter Caldwell
Regina etc.
I am pretty sure that the bulk of Caldwells were Scots-Irish when they came
over, and therefore Presbyterians. But as they came west, they tended to
become Baptist, at least the ones I know of who passed through Kentucky.
Maybe just a tendency but a strong one in my Scots-Irish family.

Kenneth,
I noted with interest your reference to your CALDWELL's being Baptist. That
is interesting because my father's mother was Bessie CALDWELL, born in New
Liberty, Pope Co, IL in 1889, daughter of Wm. A. CALDWELL, b. 1862 in TN, and
that family was Baptist all their life. Were most CALDWELL's Baptist??
She married Earl R. OWENS, also from southern IL, whose family was originally
from middle TN in the early 1800's. The OWENS's were also Baptist.
In those days, I think people tended to stay in the same religion that their
parents were in.
Are you any connection to a George W. CALDWELL who was in middle TN around
1850-60? I am looking for someone who might be connected to him.

Numerous Caldwells went from Campbell/Kenton Counties KY out to Missouri
during the early 1800s, but I have only a vague idea of them, and a few
scattered notes. They weren't my Caldwells, so I haven't paid proper
attention to them. Who are you looking for?
My tribe of Caldwells pretty much stayed in Hancock County Indiana, except
for my g-g-gf Benjamin and his brother Cicero, who went to the gold fields.
Ben died in Humboldt County CA, in 1875.

You are a pal and a buddy for writing in response to my query regarding the
WV-KY Caldwells.
I wish my Caldwells were of the "Cub Creek John" Caldwells - they have been
pretty well researched. The Caldwells I was blessed with are not nearly so
well known. I've had to dig most of it out, and whatever I say of them is
subject to review and correction.
The notes you found there in the Campbell County Historical Society archives
seem to be those written by Wm. Kenner. I know Bill, and respect him, but I
can't quite support a couple of his claims, such as Robert's wife's name as
Esther Byrd. Could be, but his widow's name was Elizabeth.
Anyway, of the three Caldwell brothers Rosbert, John and William (there is
no evidence that father Alexander went from Berkeley Co [W] VA to KY), my
Robert died there soon after loosing his land in a legal dispute, whereupon
his widow and family moved north, into Hancock County Indiana. I attach
notes that will show what I mean.
I'm delighted to share my information and hope that you or someone else may
want to respond to it.
All best regards
Jim Brown

Hi Phyllis & Jim,
I work as a volunteer at the Campbell County Historical Society on
Tuesdays and after reading your query I thought I remembered reading
something about an Alexander Caldwell there. I found it.!!! His family
owned the property, as a farm, for the (now) A.J. Jolly Park and Golf
Course and are buried on the property near the lake. Some of the history
I found on the family that you didn't mention(but might have)......his
wife's name was Ester(maiden-unknown).....in Berkeley County they lived
in Sleepy Hollow.....Alexander's occupation was - Yeoman....Son-Robert b
11-11-1762 in Berkeley County, d 2-13-1822 in Campbell County, Ky married
Esther Byrd; Son-William b 8-10-1773 in Berkeley County, d 4-26-1840 in
Campbell County, Ky married Margaret Elizabeth Gosney 3-26-1799, she was
born 6-9-1774 in Culpepper County, Va, d 12-8-1866 in Campbell County,
Ky, d/o Henry Gosney and Mary Jane Shelton; Son-John b 4-17-1770 in
Berkeley County.
We do have further info on Robert & William's children and grandchildren
but nothing on John, nor further back on Alexander.
If you find anything further on Alexander please let me know and I'll
update our records at the Society. Thanks.
Good Luck and Good Digging,
Jerry

I am interested in some general knowledge of the CALDWELL's in PA in the
early 1800's (and probably late 1700's). My great great grandfather, George
W. CALDWELL, was born in PA, according to the Census Record (that shows his
son, William A. CALDWELL, and gives the birthplace of his father). That's
all that I know about him, other than the fact that he would have been born
1840 or before, and that he was in Stewart Co., TN in 1862, when his son was
born.
I know PA is a large state, but in where were the CALDWELL families mostly,
in the early 1800's? Can someone tell me which counties? I need to find a
starting place, and a little help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Regina
