Dear List Friends, So many of you have been kind enough to respond to my
postings...Thanks! I have had a rather busy weekend playing Grandma...so I
have not responded to your emails yet!
I will have some time this week to get back to all of you and to post some
additional information. Then I
hope to ask some questions of my own!
Thanks for all your time and efforts to keep all of us abreast of our
"Caldwell Kin".......

Donna and I have been corresponding about a possible connection between our
CALDWELLs who have Alabama and Texas connections. I am sending part of my
last message to her in case it helps someone else and of course, in case
someone can help us!
"...Martha Jane "Mattie" CALDWELL [b.1848 AL]. Mattie's mother,
according to the Franklin County Death Index, was named Ruth GREENWOOD and
the census information indicates Ruth GREENWOOD was born in AL as was
Mattie. Since Mattie's father's given name was unknown to the person giving
her death information, I take with a grain of salt the total validity of the
mother's name!...
In the 1900 Franklin County, TX, census, the CALDWELLs near my
Mattie CALDWELL SPARKS are as follows:
Dwelling # 242
CALDWELL, Ol P. HEAD W M May 1875 25 LA AL LA Farmer
, Fanny WIFE W F Jan 1878 22 AL GA AG[sic]
#246
CALDWELL, Joe A. HEAD W M Sept 1860 39 AL AL AL Farmer
Melissa WIFE W F Sept 1857 42 TX CE[sic] MS
Eva L. DAU W F Jan 1886 14 TX AL TX
Thomas SON W M Sept 1888 11 TX AL TX
Lorenzo SON W M Mar 1891 9 TX AL TX
Gladis DAU W F Jan 1896 4 TX AL TX
James FATHR W M Jan 1822 77 AL AL AL
And now, a big "Thank you" for asking me for those names! I don't know if
it will help ME or not, but until I typed them, I'd missed that James was
Joe's FATHR! I'll have to check the James CALDWELLs in Alabama now for a
connection to Mattie!!
I spent last Monday at the State Historical Society beginning a check
of every CALDWELL in Alabama in 1850 looking for a wife named Ruth and/or a
daughter named Martha/Mattie. I checked by county, and in looking over what
I had finished, only one James CALDWELL was in the microfilm I worked on and
I couldn't locate him where the index said he was!! There are a total of 9
James (or J.) CALDWELLs and 1 James COLDWELL in the 1850 Alabama census.
So, back I go! Martha and William B. SPARKS had a son named James
Benjamin SPARKS but since William's brother was named James, I've always
thought it most probable he was named for the brother!

So Close! Do you suppose, some our dates are in error?
My William died in 1845. Thats all I know about him, except he had a son
named Samuel born in 1818 in Georgia, died in 1863, I think in Florida. Like
you I have checked everything and I can't find anything on My William
Caldwellwho would probably be born about the same time your William was to
have a child born in 1818 in Georgia. Sure wish I could find him. I have
him down as William T. Caldwell.
Looking for the parents of William Caldwell, born 1780-90 Cumberland, PA.
Married 2/29/20 Hagerstown, MD. To Susanna Curfman, killed by anti masons 1832
in Washington, CO. MD. Had four children, David Born12/22/1820,Daniel born
1822, William born 1824 and Angeline born 1826.
this is the last try before going to a professional genealogist
This is a list of Caldwells with land that was registered early in eastern
Ohio. I put it on a spreadsheet so I can sort it and see who lives near
who, order of dates registering the land, etc etc. Maybe it will help
someone. The Range-Township-Section indicates where the land was, given the
right map and a clear head. Z or Z-M indicates which survey (either the
Military lands in the east of OH, or that area to the south of there in OH.
The ranges are numbered east to west. The residence indicates either where
they already have some land, or live, or are moving from.
Hope this helps someone.

Sometime ago someone wanted information on a Matthew Caldwell...possibly in
Texas. I have continued prowling through my "box" and found the information
I wanted to share with anyone searching for info on a Matthew Caldwell who
may have been in Texas.
I found three articles...all VERY INTERESTING which mention a Matthew
Caldwell. They do not give his parents names or where he came from ( I don't
think) but the articles are wonderful for their "color" and "slice of life"
stuff.
Go to these sites:
http://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/plumcreeknichols.
htm 10 pages on "The Council HouseFight and Battle of Plum Creek"
http://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/captains.htm 15pages on "Dewitt Colony
Militia Captains" on page 3 it lists Mathew Caldwell as a Captain....good
article.
http://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/saladonichols.htm...7 pages more mentions of
Mathew Caldwell or James Caldwell...both were part of this time and area of
activity.
I hope this helps someone. I know it does not give genealogical information
.i.e. birthdates, marriages, and parents.....but goodness, if you ever could
prove this Caldwell was one of yours, you would have a treasure in the
stories!
I am still "finding" things in my "box"....so will keep posting them until I
have completed my store.
If I am "cluttering up" the list with this stuff and you want me to
stop...just let me know!
