Lucy,
Both STARLING and GARLAND are Southside VA surnames/families. I wonder if
those boys were named for someone who intermarried with the CALDWELL family
of Lunenburg, VA? Of course, you may have thought of this already.

When my parents found out they were going to have thier first child, my father said he wanted to name me after his father, Earl Carleton. No problem as everyone told my mother it would be a boy she picked Carle. So when I was born she decided to slap a ys on the end, Carleys, then just for fun she added Sue, for a girl my dad dated in high school. Carleys "Sue" Cowherd Poole
Also my sister is named for both our grandmothers, Loleta Belle Dye Cowherd and Anna Belle Harland. Dye-Anna Belle
Sue Poole OK
This is to Lois J. Lane. Perhaps your James Bird Caldwell was named after
mother's maiden name? What time period and area?
My ggggrandmother was Matilda Bird/Byrd Livesay and her husband (James)
mother was Ellender - ( Nellie - Eleanor?) Caldwell b. abt 1780 perhaps in
the British Isles. They were in Grayson County, Virginia. Does any of this
ring bells for anyone? There were lots of Byrd/Birds in the area of Grayson
County. We know about Matilda but have searched and searched for
information on Ellender. She m. abt 1800.

In my Caldwell Family there are 2 fairly unusual names. One fella is
names Weld Caldwell. (I have seen other families with that name) and the
brother is James Bird or Byrd Caldwell. They called him Byrd.
Interesting how they would have come up with those names. I wonder where
they came from?

Please, Lilla, for future generations sake, don't change your name. I only
wish that some of our forefathers had wanted unusual names for their sons and
grandsons and so on. Enough of the John, William, and Andrew CALDWELLs! I'm
pulling my hair out trying to decide who belongs to whom.
By the way, anyone out there know of a Claud CALDWELL with a wife named Nora
who lived in Pope County, IL around 1910 (when he was married)? Had a
daughter named Eudella. His father was William Augustus CALDWELL.
I am looking for a Nancy (Ann) CALDWELL, b. ca 1715, who married a John REED,
probably in Lancaster Co., PA. John REED served as a captain in the
Lancaster County Associators prior to the Rev. War. John and Nancy had six
children (Nancy, Rebecca, Jane, Mary, John, and David. John and Nancy later
moved to Franklin Co., PA.
Trying to locate any information on Delila Caldwell born between
1780-1785 in either East TN or VA. She supposedly lived in the Ragsdale Creek
area of Giles CO.
Married James McKinney about 1803 and was listed as early settler's of
Limestone County,AL. Delila died Sept.20,1881. Orbit says she was 101,but
dates on census conflict this age.
Does anyone have a Delila that might fit in with what little
information I have on her? We can't seem to find anything about her before
the McKinney marriage and we don't have anything documented about when they
actually married.
Barry CO Missouri was listed as a source in a book with James and
Delila and their children but doesn't say what fact goes with what source. I
did find a Delila listed in the Goodspeed's of that county but it is dated
1888.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Looking for information on my great grandmother Minerva CALDWELL. She was the daughter of Fred J. CALDWELL and Mary E. BEVIS. Minerva married Robert Bordon JOHNSON on Oct 29, 1899 at Shushan, New York. They had 2 daughters Edna and Alice Emmeline born at Athol, Massachusetts. Minerva died Sept.25, 1904. Edna was sent to Minerva's parents and Alice was sent to her father's parents in Nova Scotia. Minerva had the following siblings that I know of, Alice(b. 1887), Ida(b.1892), Bessie(b.1899) and Lillian(b.1901). I would appreciate any information anyone is able to give me. Many thanks in advance.

A friend is mine is starting a new endeavor and I thought you might want
to
help. She has a great sense of humor, so make sure you read the PS at
the
end!
Hi! My name is Sherry. I'm conducting sort of an experiment on peoples
names, and I would like your help if you have a minute. I am currently
compiling information on what, why, and how parents name their children.
All I want to know is your given first name and maybe your middle name
(I
don't want your last name, unless you think it is an important part of
your
naming story). Then I would like to know why you were named that, and
how
the spelling was decided. And of course, any other interesting facts
you
care to share about your name, your heritage, your birthplace, your age
group, etc. Most importantly, though, I just want your personal naming
story - even if it seems boring or simple, its very important! I would
be
interested in any other naming stories you would like to share as well.
Please reply to me at whatsername2000(a)ivillage.com then if you don't
mind,
would you please forward my request to anyone who may be interested in
sharing their naming story?
Thank you! I really appreciate your help!
Sherry Emerson
Lawrence, Kansas
P.S. My naming story is below, if you are interested.
It was during the holiday season in 1965 in Kansas. My parents were
preparing food to bring to a company party and got tipsy on cooking
sherry.
On their way to the party, they got a little frisky and stopped the car
to...well...you know. As it turns out, I was conceived right there in
the
front seat of the car. When I was born, they decided "Sherry" would be
an
appropriate name for me, and spelled it just like the wine.
