Surname: Stephen Caldwell, John Caldwell
-------------------------
Am looking for record of his death.
Am looking for record of his birth.
Thank you Audrey for downloading that whole history and genealogy.
I am resending this because it did not come up on my email so others
wouldn't have received it either. I'm hoping someone is familiar with
this maily and can help me get unstuck.
Working backwards, my g-g- grandmother was Zerelda Caldwell. She was
born 1816 in Caldwell County
Kentucky.
She married John Ray of Livingston Ct on Jan 7 1835 in Caldwell Ct.
They had the following children, perhaps others:,
1. David,
2. Mary Z.,
3. Roberta Fredonia
4. Frances Russell.
I believe her father was David Caldwell, brother to Francis M.
Caldwell. When David wed Catherine
Davidson in June 1807, Livingston County, Francis M. Caldwell put up
bond. Francis married Nancy
Davidson in Feb 1801 also in Livingston County. She was probably a
sister to Catherine but I have been
unable to find their parents.
Is this David the son of the David Caldwell who wed Phoebe Mann?
There seemed to have been a lot of David's in Western Kentucky early
19th century. Any help would be
appreciated.

Just wondered when looking for your Samuel if you ever came across a Samuel

Does anyone connect with John and Sara Mulligan Caldwell married 1795 in
Ohio Co. Va(WV). Who were his parents? Where was he from? Any info welcome.
Thank you
Connie
Joy, much before 1800, we have no documentation but I will share a bit of
information we have from personal family histories just in case we may be
able to make connections ?
(This was sent to me by one of the MO descendants.) "A Genealogy of the
Caldwell Family, Savanah, MO. (written about 1907) I, John Rice Caldwell,
now in my 75th year, undertake to give the genealogy of our branch of the
Caldwell family; yet I feel that in part, it is only a legend, as we have so
little recorded data. Our great grandfather, William Caldwell, was born and
reared in Scotland. When a young man he went to Ireland to work in barley
and wheat harvest and settled there permanently and here he married to a Miss
Crawford in County Down. To this union were born six or seven children, vs.
the eldest, John (my grandfather), James, Crawford, Nancy (who married Noble
Beals), Sarah (married Rev. Rice) and one married James Edgar. The parents
died in Ireland." (There is more but for the sake of brevity, I will stop
here.)
John came to America to find a place for his orphaned family and finally
settled in Ross County OH where he met and on 24 Dec, 1807, married Mary
McClure who was also of Scottish descent. She was born in York Co, PA 8 Nov
1780. She came down the Ohio River with her parents on a raft in 1790 and
landed at the mouth of Licking Creek, KY where they made their way to the
nearest military post where they spent their first year, protected by a
"lockade". At that time they moved to Ross Co.
Another brief history written in a letter from O.D. Caldwell to his brother,
Noble, (both sons of Allen whom we believe from census information to be the
son of the above referenced Crawford Caldwell and his wife, Sarah or Sally
McClure as she was listed in the marriage record of 5 Jan 1816 Ross Co, OH)
say that they believed their grandfather to have been born in "Dengail
County, Ireland". It concurs with the early death of William and John's trip
to America but also mentions that John located the family for a time at a
location "near Pitsburgh, Penn." with no dates. My theory, totally
unsupported by data, is that the family may have come in through the port of
Baltimore (I haven't been able to find a ship's record--part of John R.
Caldwell's story has to do with attempts by John to elude British pursuit by
using the name "Crawford" so there is some confusion on ships manifests with
names) but that John might have gone ahead to clear land and prepare a home
for his siblings while leaving them in charge of his brother James at some
some "civilized" place in PA which was then on the edge of the "Northwest
Indian Territories"?
Later census data shows that Crawford Caldwell's wife, Sally McClure was born
in KY. Therefore it is possible that she might have been a younger sibling
of the Mary McClure who married Crawford's eldest sibling, John. We have no
information about the parents of either Mary or Sally although there is
reference to a family of McClures who were early settlers in "Ross and
Highland Counties History".
I am not sure that any of this will be pertinent to your search but there
were enough similarities to at least make the attempt. Please feel free to
contact me if you would like more information. If not, I wish you "good
hunting" in your search.

Hi,
I was going through the Caldwell archives and found a possible source for my
Caldwell's. Only thing....the email address is no longer active. So I hope
it is not improper to use a the source information to try to get someone
else to answer with possible input.
The following information was from Carol Clark.
Erie Co. Pennsylvania. We have a lot of CALDWELLS there.
Four brothers, Robert, David, John and William came from Co. Donegal,
Ireland in the late 1700's. Settled in Lycoming Co., PA first. Then
about 1797 Robert, David and John moved into Erie Co. PA. They settled
in Millcreek Twp. and Northeast Twp. The brothers married into the
following surnames in Erie County. DUNN, MCCLURE, NICHOLS,GREER/GRIER,
LOWREY, BRAN, STONE, KEMPLAIN, PARKER, HUNTER, FARVER,
HAY,WARREN,CATLIN,GRAHAM, ZANG, MOORE,ZUCK, and OLIVER.
My lost Samuel Caldwell, married a Warren, his favorite niece married a
Graham, and his wife had McClure, Lowrey, and Zuck cousins.....So I do wish
to find information on this so far "no clue for" Caldwell.
Thanks, Joy

Mother: Martinna Caldwell dob Jan 1871 in Pennsylvania or New York

4. William m. Elizabeth Ann WILLIAMS, who was born in Laurens District, SC
and died in Newberry District, SC. Apparently, William and wife, Elizabeth
died three days apart, 1814.
5. Eleanor CALDWELL, married John MOORE and remained in VA when the rest of
the family moved to SC.
6. Rebecca CALDWELL married Josiah EAST and lived in the Laurens, SC area.
7. James CALDWELL, married Elizabeth FORREST.
Children: 10. Samuel, William, George, James, John, Robert, Elizabeth,
and three other daughters. Source: "CALDWELL book."
8. Sarah CALDWELL, married Dr. James MARTIN.
9. David CALDWELL, was the youngest child. He was married three times.
This David CALDWELL migrated into GA; however, research on him should be
carefully done inasmuch as a cousin, David CALDWELL, settled in Wilkes, GA
ca 808, moved to Jasper County, GA and died in Upson County in 1825 and must
not be confused with him.
More later. Audrey

CALDWELL
Source: "The Old Free State," Vol. II by BELL
(Lunenburg County, VA)
"This family is a very ancient one. It is said to be descended from the
Albigenses and Waldenses of the Piedmont section of Italy, who were driven
into France by the Roman Catholic persecutions. Some of the CALDWELLS, who
were living at Mount Arid, near Toulon, France, earned the enmity of Francis
I, of France, and after his escape from imprisonment under Charles V, of
Germany, three CALDWELLS, brothers, John, Alexander and Oliver, emigrated to
Scotland, and there with the consent of James I, purchased the estate of a
Bishop named DOUGLAS, located near Solney Frith. It was provided that "the
said brothers, John, Alexander and Oliver, late of Mount Arid," should have
their estate known as "CALDWELL" on condition that when the King should
require they should each send a son with twenty men of sound limbs, to aid
in the wars of the King."
"There is a cup, preserved as an heirloom, which represents a chieftain
and twenty mounted men, all armed, and a man drawing water from a well, with
the words underneath, "Alexander of CAULDWELL." It also shows a fire
burning on a hill, over the words, "Mount Arid," and also a vessel
surrounded by high waves, which latter was intended to commemorate the fact
that their ancestors were seamen in the Mediterranean, in the latter part of
the Fourteenth Century."
"Oliver CROMWELL's grandmother was Ann CALDWELL, and Joseph, John,
Alexander, Daniel, David and Andrew, of CAULDWELL, went with CROMWELL to
Ireland, and in various capacities served his interest there, after his
accession to the Protectorate. Upon the restoration of Charles II, a number
of the family emigrated to America."
"There are traceable three distinct immigrations of the CALDWELLS of
Ireland."
"First, John CALDWELL, of County Tyrone, Ireland, with his family landed
at New Castle, Delaware, Dec 10, 1727."
"Second, James CALDWELL, of County Tyrone, Ireland, with his family who
came in 1769. With him also came two younger brothers, John who settled in
Virginia, and David who settled in one of the Carolinas."
"Third, John CALDWELL of Harmony Hill, near Ballymony, County Antrim,
Ireland, who with his family somewhere between 1798 and 1800 settled on the
present site of Salisbury Mills, Orange County, New York, except the
youngest son, who settled in Charleston, S.C. Two brothers later came to
Amercia, one James CALDWELl settled in Philadelphia, and the other, Richard
CALDWELL, settled in Baltimore."
"We are concerned chiefly with the first emigrant John CALDWELL and his
group, comprising his wife, five children and three brothers-in-law, MOORE,
RICHEY and DUDGEON, who landed at New Castle, Delaware, Dec 10 1727, for he
was one of the pioneer settlers of the territory created into Lunenburg
County. After landing and before emigrating to Virginia he located for a
time in Lancaster, County, Pennsylvania."
"The circumstances under which he and his Presbyterian associates came to
Virginia are given in the account of the early Presbyterians in Chapter IX,
Vol. I, on the Early Churches. He was born in Ireland (probably in County
Derry), and there married Margaret PHILLIPS. Five of their children were
born before they came to America."
"John (I) CALDWELL (b. in Ireland, d. 1750-51, in Lunenburg County,
Virginia), married, in Ireland, Margaret PHILLIPS (d. evidently before 1748,
for the will of John CALDWELL dated Nov 26, 1748, makes no mention of her."

Better yet, use cut and paste. That way you eliminate all those
obnoxious > marks at the beginning of each line. FYI-- according to the
news, the virus is unleashed through forwarded attachments only. The
body of the message is empty. If you don't open the attached file,
you're all set. And... the extension on the file name is .vbs, so don't
ever open an attachment with that file extension. The good news, our
jokes are safe!
After hearing about this latest virus, and trying to decide how to know what
to open and what not to, I came up with this solution. When forwarding
stories, jokes, information, etc., lets erase "Fw" and write the subject in
the space. That way we will know that what we are getting is not a forwarded
virus and can open it with relative safety. I say relative, because even as
I type this, someone out there is coming up with a way to cause us grief
without our knowing it. I know its a lot of trouble, but its the only way I
know not to get a virus and loose everything on our computers.
And I still say, if people have so much time on their hands, I have a few
genealogy projects that will keep them out of trouble!
