Hello all,
I just subscribed to this list so I'll let you know who I'm researching.
My g.g.g.grandfather Allan Caldwell married Janet Hunter in Galston,
Scotland in 1826. They had three children: Janet born 1827, John born
1828 and Allan(my g.g. grandfather) born in 1831(all born in Galston).
Shortly after Allan was born, the family came to the Little Bras d'Or
area of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. Allan, Sr. was a miner
in Scotland and in Cape Breton.
I know little about Janet and John. John supposedly went to the U.S. and
married an actress. Janet married a Crawford Wallace in the U.S. or
married him and then moved to the U.S.
Allan Jr. married Martha Anderson and settled in Sydney Mines, Cape
Breton. Several of their children later moved to the U.S. including
Allan(Pennsylvania), Andrew(Boston), Martha (married a Damon in Boston),
Elizabeth(married a Hollis in Boston), Jenny (married Robert Burchell
in Boston), and Agnes(married Everett Cann in Jamaica Plains, Mass.).
Two of Allan and Martha's children moved to Montreal: Annie(married
Alexander McSween) and Margaret (married William Burrell).
The children who remained in Cape Breton were: John (Dominion), James,
Wallace, George and Rebecca (MacDonald) who all remained in Sydney
Mines.
I would be happy to exchange information with any descendants of this
family.
Regards
Susan Purchase
St. John's, Nf.,Canada
I am seeking any descendants of Matthew Caldwell.
He was teh son of Samuel Caldwell and Ann Kiniead, brother of Kinkead
Caldwell of VA-KY- and MO.
He was born 1781 VA died 1855 in Franklin Co MO.
He married Ann Scott MARTIN (who died between 1841-9) in Bourbon Co KY
on 17 Apr 1805.
My research may not be 100% accurate, but I BELIEVE they only had one
child, a daughter, Serena K. Caldwell, born 12 April 1806 died 14 Apr
1897.
She married in Missouri to Ephraim Barnabus Strickland.
They were the parents of the following children:
1. Mary Ann (1825-1874) m. Andrew Chunn Hereford, went to TX (Fayette,
Lavaca, COlorado Cos)
2. Caroline (1831-?) m Griffith Thomas, went to TX (Fayette Co)
3. Serena K. (1832-?) m James M Lipscomb
4. Josephine (1833-?) may have married John B Peck
5. Matthew Barnabus (1835-1922) m Mary Ann COnway
6. Mirabeau B Lamar 1840-1925 m Agziwla Conway
7. Adoniva 1840-?
8. John D. 1843-?
9. Adelia 1846-?
10. Edward A b 1841 m Emma___
11. Andrew b 1850
12. Malinda m william White, went to Madison Co GA
SO, with this large of a group of Grandchildren, even thru one daughter
Matthew Caldwell and Ann Scott Martin must have many many descendants.
Regina Roper
Thought this was kind of good, a little food for thought.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Archivists are using hot air and blotting paper to
salvage hundreds of thousands of pages of government records damaged in
a fire at a National Archives storage center just outside Washington.
Among them were veterans' records and papers connected to a lawsuit over
mismanagement of American Indians' money.
The fire occurred Tuesday at the Washington National Records Center in
Suitland, Md., which stores more than 3.7 million cubic feet of records.
Archives officials said 3,000 cubic feet of records were stored in areas
where sprinklers activated, but fewer than 300 cubic feet --
approximately
700,000 pages -- were actually damaged or destroyed.
The bulk of the records were from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
''These are inactive files of deceased veterans who previously made
claims
for benefits,'' said Robert Knode, records officer for the veterans
benefits
administration. ''Sometimes we recall these files when somebody wants a
copy for genealogical or other purposes, but there should be only a
minimal
effect.''
Another 60 boxes of damaged records were involved in a lawsuit over
brought by American Indians charging government mismanagement of a $500
million system of trust accounts for American Indians.
The water damage to those records was just the latest problem with
documents
in the case; other Indian trust records have been inadvertently shredded
or
found dumped in a trash-strewn shed on a North Dakota reservation.
Also damaged were records were from District of Columbia government
offices,
the Labor Department's Hour and Wage Division and the U.S. Patent and
Trademark office. The patent and trademark records were scheduled for
disposal.
''We regret the loss of a single page, but we're not sure yet what the
loss
is,''
said Gerald George, communications director for the archives. ''We have
some record damage and we regret that, but on the other hand, our fire
system contained the fire so that it didn't do widespread damage.''
Conservation work is under way.
Warm, dry air is being blown into the storage stacks and blotting paper
is
being used to extract moisture from pages, said Susan Cooper, a
spokeswoman
for the archives. Drying chambers have been set up and refrigerated
trucks
are being used to store records that are very wet.
''They keep the records cold to prevent mildew from forming on them,''
she
said.
My paternal ggrandmother was a Caldwell (Adeline) who lived in Marion and
Grundy County of Tennessee. She married Aaron Bryant. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Dear List: I have been monitoring the list and enjoying, but must join in on
J.W. Caldwell messages of late. I have a Great Aunt; Alice Henrietta
Applegarth, born 1870, who married the third time to a J. W. Caldwell.
Her obituary reads per E-mail from James Foster 7/21/1999:
Obituary from Las Vegas Daily Optic, Las Vegas, New Mexico, Saturday, July
27, 1957, MRS ALICE CALDWELL, Funeral services were held in Portland, Ore.,
Friday, for a former Las Vegan, Mrs. Alice Caldwell, 87, who died at the Good
Samaritan Hospital, Wednesday. Alice Henrietta Applegarth, born in Atwater,
Kandiyohi Co., Minn., April 13, 1870, was the daughter of William Henry
Applegarth, Civil War veteran and Waco, Nebr., merchant. She is survived by
two daughters, Mrs. C. V. Shearer of Old Homestead Ranch in the Mineral Hill
area, and Mrs. Thelma Davis of Portland, and a number of grandchildren,
including Mrs. Audrey Simpson of Las Vegas. Mrs. Caldwell made her home at
the Shearer ranch for several years, leaving about 25 years ago to make her
home in Portland, where she and J. W. Caldwell, a jeweler and veteran of the
Spanish American War, were married. After his death she returned to Las
Vegas, making her home here with her daughter until 1947, when she returned
to Portland to make her home.
I have in my possession a picture of Alice Henrietta Applegarth Caldwell
taken at about the time she would have been married to J.W. Caldwell.
Pictured with her is my aunt, Alice's niece and an older gentlemen. I
believe it to be J.W. Caldwell. I would estimate him to be about the same
age as Alice give or take 5 years.
It is so strange to me that the J.W. is used in so many instances. I have
noticed that there are many James, John, William's in the Caldwell line so it
could be any combination. Wallace is another variable.
Please keep J.W. of Portland, Oregon in mind and if you think we connect
please let me know. Would love to know more about Great "Aunt Etta" in her
later years.

I have lots more I'm willing to share, with the main source of this
family is a booklet written by Lee Irvine Parks, titled "Family History".

Renee,
I LOVE the story.I am printing this out for keeps.Sometimes I want to cry,I just
wished I could have started this search back when my grandfather was still
living. My daddy has early alzhiemiers.Sometimes he will say he remembered his
grandma but he never has re-called remembering his grandpa. His grandpa,J.W.(James
Walter CALDWELL) died from Diabbeties we were told.He was in his 30's.then his wife
Ida re-married.Since daddy's dad left Tennessee, married and reared a large family
in LOUISIANA;traveling was little with a big family. They did move to Tennessee when
my daddy was about 9 years old but they only had about 4 kids then. But he was too
young to remember a whole lot. Later a total of 11 kids. One died as a toddler from
walking in the fireplace with his grandpa hat on his head.He could see from under
the hat and stumbled in the fire.He died days later while in his mamas arms.
Thanks for the information you sent.If I ever get my Caldwell's going It just may
run into your CALDWELL'S.I would love to kow if any one else has a J.W. or James
Walter CALDWELL in their file.Maybe they would have a connection.
tHANKS ONCE AGAIN,
alice
