Hello All,
In 1997 my wife and I visited Lesmohagow, Scotland where my wife found
some of her relatives buried. While there I took a video of a Caldwell
tombstone. In trying to read it now, I can only make out as follows:
William Caldwell put the stone in for his father.
Father David Caldwell - died Sept. 10, 1800 or 1806
Anne Taylor - spouse - died age 36
Mother Janet or Jane
This stone is in the cemetery at Lesmohagow Old Parish Church
Founded by King David IX
anno 1140
Rebuilt by heirators
anno 1803
The Lesmohagow Library has a list of all buried in the cemetery.
Don't know if this will help anyone.
Boyd
Hi Charles,
I would love to be able to put my family with one of the "known" Caldwells
of the time, however for now I'll just have to keep digging. I've read a
bit about the family you mentioned of John and Jennet CALDWELL but have
never seen any evidence that mine could be connected to them. Do you know
if anyone has ever tracked their complete descendants? I'm hoping that I
can find a will for a Dr. James CALDWELL who mentions the three children. I
haven't looked very hard for wills yet. I did look thru some old papers
last night that I had sent for information years ago which might turn up
something. I believe this was before I knew that I was looking for a Dr.
James Caldwell. It was called a land record, but was actually a sale of
some slaves to a Dr. James CALDWELL from a Joseph WATKINS, 17 May 1795 in
Queen Anne's County. Now I will try to see if I can find a will for him in
Queen Anne's County. I'm hoping there is an index somewhere for that. I
wish Q.A. County had a mailing list but I think it is part of MDGEN-L.
Thank you for your suggestions. If you think of anything else, I'd
appreciate your input.

Dear Rooters,
Here's the latest from RootsWeb Review, Vol. 2 No. 19:
WHY DOES ROOTSWEB NEED YOUR SUPPORT?
by Dr. Brian Leverich <leverich(a)rootsweb.com>
Sometimes it is difficult for users to understand the costs
involved in operating RootsWeb and why it is worth genealogists'
time and money to support RootsWeb.
For example, take the United States census. RootsWeb is currently
providing server support to the USGenWeb Archives and Census
Projects as they bring the U.S. census online. Our goal is to
have both a searchable index to the census *AND* images of all
the pages available on an open basis for all Internet
genealogists.
Our best estimate is that bringing the census online will require
about 3.6 terabytes of data storage. That means we will need
about 200 18 GB hard disks, and each of those disks costs about
$1,000. That means the data storage alone is going to cost
$200,000, and that doesn't include the servers and the bandwidth
to make that storage accessible over the Web.
Is $200,000 a lot of money? Well, sort of. Regardless of how much
they want to help, Karen and Brian couldn't pay for that even if
they mortgaged their house and cashed in their pension savings.
On the other hand, $200,000 is only about 67 cents per user at
RootsWeb. That is about 1/100 of what some commercial firms are
charging for data they have locked up in members-only areas.
Bringing the U.S. census online is not the only project RootsWeb
supports. We are hosting literally hundreds of other data
projects, some American and many for other countries (like the
British FreeBMD Project).

There is a very good chance that your Caldwells, since they are said
to be from the Eastern Shore, are from John and Jennet Caldwell
who appeared on the Eastern shore in 1688. The family is centered
in Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties in Maryland and in
Kent County, Delaware. But with time the family moved on to other
parts of Maryland and to Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and other
points.

Hi Charles,
Unfortunately, I don't know which Eastern Shore county my Caldwell line is
from. Here is my dilemma:
My gg grandfather, James Peckham CALDWELL was born in "Maryland" on 6
Jan.1793. He had two sisters and no brothers THAT I KNOW OF. One sister,
Jane E(liza?) was married to James CALDER of Baltimore and had a son,
Robert James CALDER. James Calder died when R.J. was about 3 years old, so
Jane's brother (James Peckham Caldwell) raised her son. The three of them
were in Hopkinsville, Christian Co. KY by about 1819, then relocated to
Brazoria Co. TX in about 1832. Jane's son R.J. Calder had a bio written
about him later in life which stated that his grandfather was a Dr. James
CALDWELL, physician and planter, who lived on the Eastern Shore of
Maryland. No county was mentioned. I haven't been able to find this Dr.
James CALDWELL, but I have only begun to scratch the surface there yet.
James Peckham and Jane Caldwell were Methodists, but that doesn't mean that
their parents were.
I am wondering if the name "Peckham" could be J.P.'s mother's maiden name.
I could only find one Peckham so far - a John - in Queen Anns Co., Worrell
Hundred. However there are quite a few Peckhams in Rhode Island. I would
like to find out if there is a Caldwell/Peckham marriage in or somewhere
near MD in the late 1780s or beginning of the 1790s. I don't have access to
any of those marriage CD ROMS which might list something.
James Peckham and Jane had another sister, Anna Maria, who also turned up
in Brazoria Co. TX at the same time, but I don't know yet whether she had
moved to KY with them after leaving MD. She married Samuel D. WALTMAN (I
don't know in what state, but am guessing MD or possibly KY) and only had
one child who died before arriving at the age of manhood. She was also
Methodist.
Unfortunately this is all I know of this family's Maryland history at this
time. As I said, there are many things I haven't checked yet, so hopefully
something will turn up. If anyone has any suggestions or knows anything
about this family, I'd love to hear from you!
Thanks,
Marianne Gilbert <blueskye(a)primenet.com>

Dear Marianne: This is very interesting. I have a James Caldwell, who
died in Henry Co., TN, but his father and brothers and sisters had come
from Prince Edward Co., VA to Montgomery Co., TN in 1806. Montgomery
Co., Tn touches Christian Co., KY. The father, John Caldwell, had died
1821 in Montgomery Co., TN. Could this possibly be the same family? My
trouble is that I too have no middle names and all the names I'm going
on are John, James, Robert, and Samuel (real uncommon!!!). Thanks for
posting this. I'll keep it handy for further development, if possible.
Susan Daniel (Murfreesboro, TN)
Hi Caldwell listers,
I was looking in an 1824 Mobile AL newspaper for my DAVIS line and the
following advertisement caught my attention, as I also have a James P.
(Peckham) CALDWELL, however he was from the Eastern Shore (county unknown)
of Maryland, then went to Christian Co. KY and then to Brazoria Co. TX. My
James would have been in KY in 1824, so I don't think this one is mine,
however I thought I'd share it with the list.

Sixty Dollars Reward will be given to any person who will apprehend a White
Man, and two Negro Fellows named Peter and Lawrence, stolen from Newberry
District, South Carolina, on the 11th of July last.
Peter is about 6 feet, 1 inch high, spare made, of a yellowish complexion,
has a large scar on the back of his right hand between the fore and middle
finger, has lost the first joint of one of his little toes by frost, reads
very well, and writes a tolerably plain hand. Is about 25 years old,
sensible and active, and not easily embarrassed when examined.
Lawrence is about 5 feet 11 inches high, and well proportioned, of rather a
light complexion--is about 22 years old. No particular marks recollected.
It is supposed they will make their way to this place, as they were heard
of at Montgomery, on the 12th inst. enquiring the way to Mobile.
The above reward will be paid to whoever will apprehend and secure in jail,
the White Man and above described Negroes, or $20 for either of them, on
giving immediate information to JAMES CALDWELL or WM. CALMES, Newberry
Court House, South Carolina, or to the subscriber at Cahawba(?), if
apprehended within fourteen days.

Hi all
I'm looking for any and all Alexander CALDWELLS born in PA during the first
half of the1700s.
My particular Alexander later lived in Berkeley Co VA. He was perhaps
related to Andrew and John CALDWELL of that same county. I have evidence
that they were from PA but I don't know where, or from what family.
I thought I had found Alexander's origin in Lancaster County, a son of
Andrew CALDWELL Sr., but he has been eliminated as mine.
So, back to the drawing board.
Input? Give me a lead on any PA Alexander and I'll follow it up.
