Caldwell was pronounced with a silent "L" - Cadwell - by many
families, especially the New Englanders. My 2nd Great Grandmother,
according to living relatives, was Jenny Cadwell! I researched that
name , because Cadwell is a surname in its own right, for many months,
with absolutely no luck. Upon showing an aunt my tree chart, with the
name Jenny Cadwell in it (and no names further back in that line), she
said "You've spelled Cadwell wrong! It's C-A-L-D-W-E-L-L!
The frustrating part about this name is that, two generations earlier,
in New York Census records, it was recorded as "COLWELL". But the
real name is Caldwell, going back to the 1718? immigrant to
Londonderry, New Hampshire, James Caldwell.
The moral of the story is: Don't get hung up on any particular
spelling, because "that's the way grandma spelled it! Chances are
ancestors and people recording ancestors spelled it about every
possible way to spell it!

Marian, Clarke, & anyone interested:
It has been some years since I went over this material but I noted on my
records that there seemed to be conflicting information between accounts by
Summer, George Leland (Hist. & Gen. of Newberry Co., SC) and MIZE, L.R. &
J.J., authors, Threads of Ancestor (U of GA printing dept.) and also
Greenwood County Sketches by Margaret Watson.
One version has: CALDWELL, DAVID ROBERT b. 1811 SC, spouse Elizabeth Wardlaw
dau of Robert.
Children:
William m. Catherine Davenport
James m. Jane Davenport
Robin m. Miss Sloan
4 other ch
states the family removed to GA then to TX and that parents of David Robert
Caldwell was James Caldwell and Mary Elizabeth Forrest.
______________________________________-
Another version has CALDWELL, DAVID ROBERT with the same parents but b.11
Mar 1784 in Newberry Co., SC; d. 11 Dec 1844 Meriwether Co., GA
Spouse: Jeanette McLeace b. 1784 in SC; d.1884
Children:
Mary 1805 SC
Andrew 1807 SC
James 1809 SC
Jane 1810 SC
Martha 1812 SC
Joseph 1814 SC
Nancy Agnes 1816 SC
George 1816 SC
Newton Alex. 1818 SC
Eliza 1820 SC
Margaret 1822 SC
Lucinda 1825 SC
Seems pretty obvious that if the name David Robert Caldwell is correct for
both, then his parentage is wrong on one.
Maybe someone can help out on this question??

Hello: I have another Robert Caldwell in Newberry SC. Robert Caldwell (1784,
SC - 1844,GA) married Janette McLees. Children Mary, Joseph, James, Jane,
Martha, Agnes, Margaret, Lucinda. George, Newton and Elizabeth (My line.
Elizabeth married James Bell.)
Some DAR records state that Robert was a son of James Caldwell and Mary
Forrest of Newberry SC, that Robert moved from Newberry to Anderson SC about
1816, to Elbert Cty, GA in 1830s, and Meriwether GA by 1835. Can anyone
confirm this? Does anyone know how he fits into the Caldwells mentioned in
the original message below? Thanks, Clarke Rodgers

Has anyone else come across the surname
Cadwell?
I have a birth certificate that gives a mother's
maiden name as Cadwell, but that individual's
death cert. says Caldwell. Was this a common
spelling mistake with this name or is this a variation
of its own?
Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi List!
I'm new to this list, and this is my first post here. I hope someone
can help me.
Mary Jane Caldwell (1847-1934) married James Abraham Smith (1845-1935)
in
Montgomery Co. in 1865. Another researcher tells me that Mary Janes
parents were Hugh and Francis Caldwell. This is the only info I
have...the names. Is there anyone out there that can give me anymore
info on this family? I'm willing to share what info I have! Thanks!
