I have found more clues since I posted several weeks ago--but they bring more questions too.
My great grandmother was Elizabeth CALDWELL (1853-1923). She married James PENNY in Topeka, KS in 1866.
She was born in TN, and the one likely family for her in TN shows in the 1860 census for Hamilton Co. In the household are:
L. M. CALDWELL (age 30) born in TN.
Mary (age 28) born in GA.
Elizabeth (age 7) born in TN.
Alice (age 4) born in TN.
Do any names look familiar?
I have found no better 'fit' in TN. But Hamilton County is a long distance from Topeka KS, for a 13 year old to move to. Does anyone have access to the 1870 census to see if the household was unchanged?
Any comparison for a relocation from southern TN to KS, ca 1866?
Thx
Bill Penny

Does anyone have additional info on the line below, sent to the list by
Jim? I'm trying to track a William CALDWELL b ca 1803 SC. He =probably=
had a sister who married a HALL before 1824 and moved to Fayette Co, AL
where they were killed by a tornado. I'm tracking William as a probable
brother, in hopes of finding the grandparents of my James
Colwell/Caldwell HALL. THANKS!!

supplied announcement dated Jun 5 1998.)
Many visiors and much material exchanged there relates to
descentants of William (Billy) CALDWELL b 1771 in VA
s/o probably Seth CALDWELL I. He formed a known family of
6 in Giles co VA ca 1799-1810. While there he iniated travel/
trade between his area of VA and Knox, future Harlan co and
surronding areas of KY. He moved there (KY) in 1811-13.
In 1819 his VA wife and her
bros were on a deed filed there
which included that her husband was "now a resident of
Kentucky"
The 1995 "CALDWELLS of Virginia and KY" mentions that no
"marriage records containing him and his KY 'wife' have
been located but beginning in Knox county KY ca 1811 the
first of a line of 10 more children were born with her.
Of course descendants of his KY group are a larger percent
of the attemdees but the key generator of William's VA data
has been meaningful there.
There have been folks from Europe and wide areas of US there
with-out formal ties to William's lines.
(I have attented 5 or so of these events and am part of
a line using the spelling COLDWELL and from a chain semi-
based in TN rather than VA or KY until Andrew Forgey
COLDWELL arrived in Harlan as engineer/surveyer in 1830's.
Married Frances JONES, iniated children and also got a
Lawyer liscense there Family then moved to Laurel Co KY.
Even tho far back and appears short this line known had a bit
of time in VA where Thomas COLDWELL m Delphia BALLARD
then they and many of their descandants lived in Hawkins and
other counties in TN.
Sorry I am this late in getting the notice out, not sure yet
that I will get there, but hope to. Jim
James Forga CALDWELL/COLDWELL
