Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Would some kind person with access to the above census, look up the
following for me?
WILLIAM CALDWELL, shoemaker, of Bury, Lancashire, who had two daughters -
CATHERINE (at that time 14 years of age) and SARAH (approximately 12 years
of age). I think there was also a son but I am unaware of his name or age.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for info on Rachael or Rebekka Caldwell b. abt. 1829 from
Pontotic Co, MS m. Sam Montgomery, from Habersham/White Co. MS? Any &
all info helpful Thanks. Linda Miller
Hi Linda,
Saw your posting on the Caldwell roots page and thought I would touch base
with you. I'm the Granddaughter of Math Purvis and Pearl Thompson of
Bristow, Oklahoma. Pearl and Math were both born in Pototoc, Mississippi.
Pearl had a sister named Nannie Thompson who married a Dock Caldwell (tho
Grandma always pronounced it Co'well). She also had 2 brothers who are
buried in Pontotoc named Brice and Byver. Grandma's Parents later moved to
Texas. Have you found Nannie
(Possibly Nancy) anywhere in your data base? I'm trying to find info on her
parents and no luck as of yet. Or if you don't have her, has anyone
contacted you who might? Would appreciate you letting me know.
Thank you for your time,
Janie Cooper Russell

I am Mary Szymanowski (grand old Irish name) displaced in Florida but
preferred home is in the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia.
I am a descendant of the Balls of Fairfax and Stafford Cos. and also
Caldwells, though I have never been able to find out a thing about my
branch of Caldwells.
I only know that my gr. gr. grandmother, Polly Caldwell, married Hardin
Ball in Lawrence Co., Ky. in the 1830's or 1840's. They later moved to
Lawrence Co., Ohio, where they died as far as I know. I'm sure they
died. I am just not absolutely sure where or when.
They had several children including Perry Ball, my gr. grandfather. He
and his wife died about 1880 in Scioto Co., Ohio. They had three
children: Mary, Lydia, and William. Mary Ball died when my mother was
very young and the children were split up. I didn't even know about
William until I was grown. As a result of these early deaths, a lot of
family history was lost.
There is someone else on the net looking for information on Hardin Ball
and Polly Caldwell. Would sure like to get in touch with them but now I
cannot even find the page where I saw it.
Would appreciate any help I can get.
Hi y'all,
I doubt that you are aware of the problems caused to Rootsweb when a person
sends multiple postings. If you,ll think back to Maiser & the awful way that
it was hit, ultimately causing the end of Maiser; possibly you can see the
damage that can be done when doing multiple postings. Our Beaver County list
has about 250 members & if each of the 14 other lists had the same membership,
that causes approx 3,500 hits to Rootsweb at one time. I hope that you can
realize the damage that can be done. In the future, if you'll just send
multiple postings to 2 or 3 lists at a time, it wouldn't be such a burden on
our server. I believe that we'd all hate to cause Rootsweb to have the
problems that Maiser had. Thanks for your future consideration & happy
hunting!! :) :)

Hi y'all,
There seems to be a lot of discussion about the way postings to this list
should be so I'll try to clear things up a bit.
1. As far as CALDWELL-L showing in the subject: this is the way that I
elected for Rootsweb to show this; the advantage being that most people are
signed up on more than one list & when they set up their mailing program to
filter messages or if they want to simply scan the subject line, they can
identify the sender quickly.
The subject line should be showing the subject of your post and it's much
easier to read if it's in all caps. If your showing a surname, do not put
spaces between the letters! Hence Caldwell should show as CALDWELL.
When replying to a message, please look at the subject line & if your reply
isn't on the same subject, change the line to reflect what your posting.
2. As far as signature lines; this should be left to the choice of the
sender. Some of us love to use long signature lines others use none. I've
made many connections from signature lines alone.
3. Now to replies going to the list; when someone makes a request to the
list, it's posted for all to read. The concensus of most members is that the
reply to a question should be posted for all to read. If your simply thanking
someone for work done or want to make general comments only applicable to one
person, please address these to the person in question and not the entire
list. Again please look when using "reply to sender" and if your reply should
not go to the entire list, change the sender address. This list has been set
up for all replies to go back to the list.
4. When replying to a message, don't resend the entire message back. Use the
cut & paste method; only sending back what is pertinant to your reply.
These lists are quite active with lots of messages going back & forth so we
all need to be considerate of our posts! If anyone has any comments on this
post, please send it to me privately & not to the entire list.
Keep up the good work & happy hunting!

Hi cousins,
Thought ya'll might like to read the monthly report given to listowners by
Brian Leverich, the co-provider of our mailing lists. We get a similar letter
from him each month & I'll post it here. Happy hunting!

I guess this is a new first -- we're posting the January
statistics after, in principle, we could have computed the
February statistics.
Oh well. It's been *extremely* busy around here, dealing
with the explosive growth and the many problems caused by
the El Nino storms.
The executive summary is that we had about 33% growth during
just the month of January:
o 27,751,946 Web files (20,835,802 in Dec) from 2,400
Websites (2,240 in Dec).
- 8,308,561 were HTML pages (not images or cgi-bin)
(5,903,137 in Dec).
- 3,574,701 were cgi-bin database searches and such.
(2,911,509 in Dec).
- 15,784,790 were GIFs (14,529,204) or JPEGs (1,255,586)
(11,849,905 in Dec were GIFs (10,902,627) or JPEGs
(947,279).
o 618,762 FTP file downloads from the USGenWeb
Archives and the ROOTS-L Library (472,838 in Dec).
o Thanks to a neat hack by Tim Pierce, we know we
shipped about 88,649,000 pieces of mail to the
2,600+ (2,300 in Dec) mailing lists we host.
o 60,000 alt.g and s.g.* Usenet News articles
to hosts on three continents (same as Dec).
o Approximately 451,786,000,000 bytes in total
(321,408,000,000 in Dec).
Besides adding hundreds of new Websites and mailing lists in
January, we also added new servers and a third and fourth T1
connection to the Internet. (A T1 is about 50 times faster
than a standard modem.) These additions have significantly
increased our costs of operation, but they were essential if
we were to continue to properly support the Internet
genealogical community.
As always, RootsWeb remains supported by user contributions.
Folks who would like to become a RootsWeb Member or Sponsor
(the cost is very modest) are invited to visit:
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html
*** You can become a Member easily using your credit card
and our new secure server. ***
Now is a particularly good time for folks to join, because we
have had a huge increase in utilization since Christmas. Our
bandwidth rate has jumped from 321 to 451 gigabytes/month, and
we're having to do numerous upgrades to our servers to support
the load. Your membership can help our capacity keep up with
the demands of the Internet genealogical community.
Thanks to everyone who participates in RootsWeb -- clearly folks
are continuing to exchanging a great deal of information! -B
