Hi All!
Sorry! for the goof in my Christmas greeting.
My Great Aunt Ophelia Myers married Elbert Caldwell, her sister married
the Gilmore.
Happy Holidays
Betty
Hi!
My name is Betty Hootman. I was born and spent most of my life in
Jefferson co., Iowa. I now am retired and live in Northern Missouri.
When my kid brother was in college he took up The family history as a
journalism project. I joined him in the quest for information, that was 35
yrs ago. He has since given it up and turned all his files over to me.
We spent many long hours digging through old records in dirty court
house basements & attics, walking thru cemeteries, digging through
libraries and pestering elderly relatives for information. When he left
Iowa, he took on writing letters to researchers and I continued to do the
foot work.
I just joined the computer age about a year ago, it has made life so
much easier. I now have about 7000 names in my data base. I am researching
15 family lines plus the past few months I have been helping my daughter
research her fathers family. Just recently I have started on the histories
of my son and my step-children.
My tie to the Gilmore's? My great Aunt married Nathaniel Squire Gilmore
in Iowa.
I would like to wish everyone a very Joyous Christmas and a Happy,
Healthy, and Fruitful 1999. Hope everyone finds that missing link in 1999.
Betty
Joan Brown, was any of your Caldwell line from the Des Moines Polk Co
Iowa area?

renamed West Des Moines) Iowa.

Roy Freeman (my father), who married Doris Sumpter
Mildred, who married Vern Bacon
Any information is greatly appreciated. Please send any reply to:

Holiday greetings to all.
My name is Joan Brown and I live outside Detroit, MI but my roots are in
NE. My Caldwells were early settlers in NE coming by way of NC>OH>IN>IA>KS>NE
and then moving on to CO, Puerto Rico, & South America. I have been
researching my family tree for about four years but the CALDWELL line only
recently. Thanks to the list I have found three new cousins, one of which has
taken our line back to MD & DE. I am retired so I have time to devote to this
hobby or should I say addiction!
Best Wishes.
Joan Brown

I have Scottish ancestors as well. We only know that John came to Australia
and we do not know what happened to the other children. Janet remarried in
1838 after James died, and she had further children.
Does anyone know of the siblings of John Caldwell?

I'm Dawn from WA State, originally from Iowa. Our small family has 2 kids, 3
dogs and one missing cat. My grandmother is a Caldwell and I am enjoying the
trip back in time finding all the family. Am finding two things run in this
side of the family, the Caldwell's (bearing accidents) live a very long time.
The other is the diabetes runs in this line. Ya take the good with the bad!
My line goes something like this:
Helen Caldwell==Washington County Iowa
Silas Caldwell==Washington County Iowa
James Thompson Caldwell==B Ohio, Died Washington County Iowa
Other surnames with this line, Shearer, Benn, Amerine/Amrine, Allaman,
Beliel/Besile, Thompson, Wilson, Chalupa and so on.
Happy Holiday and wanted you all to know that we have Snow! here in Wa State
today!
Dawn
I notice Marshall m. girl from Thorntown Boone Co IN. If you find that
your Marshall's family goes back to Thornton, you and I are probably
related. The Caldwell's were in KY before IN and PA before that. There
are still Caldwell's in Thorntown IN, so find that connection and I have
lots of info. Verna in CAAt 08:12 PM 12/20/98 EST, you wrote:

I need information on Andrew CALDWELL of Orange Co., NC.
Here are my notes:
Prior to
1718 - Andrew Caldwell immigrated to America (this may be the
Andrew Caldwell later mentioned in Orange County, NC).
1739 - August 8, Andrew Caldwell married Jennet Scott widow,
St. Michael Parish, Barbados Marriage Records 1643-1800,
Volume 1, page 164. Is this the Orange County, NC Andrew?
1761 - Andrew Caldwell, appointed constable in place of
Samuel Stuart Of Orange County, NC.
1763 - August term, Sarah (born aft 1745), daughter of John
Scott to be bound unto Andrew CADDELL or CALDWELL until
she is 18 years old, Orange County, NC.
1765 - May, Janet Caldwell and James Freeland, letters of
testamentary on estate of Andrew Caldwell, deceased.
This is the Caldwell afore mentioned Orange County, NC.
1765 - Sale of perishable estate of Andrew Caldwell, deceased.
Orange County, NC.
1765 - James Freeland relinquished his right of executorship on
Andrew Caldwell estate, Orange County, NC.
1766 - August, Margaret Caldwell, daughter of Andrew
Caldwell (1765), deceased, chose Archibald McAllister,
her step-father, as her guardian, Bond: £150. Orange
County, NC.
1766 - May, Janet Caldwell married Archibald McAllister since
she was appointed administrator of Andrew Caldwell
estate, Orange County, NC.
1766 - James Freeland appointed guardian to Margaret,
Elizabeth, Simon and William Caldwell, orphans of Andrew
Caldwell, deceased. Bond: £1000. Bondsmen: Alexander
Mebane Sr. and John Butler, Orange County, NC.
1766 - Will of Andrew Caldwell, deceased, Janet, Mary,
Elizabeth, Samuel, and William Caldwell, Orange County,
NC.
Some have said this is the father of Andrew CADDEL (CADDLE) in
Orange/Caswell/Person Co., NC until 1805, moving to Pendleton Dist.,
SC then the St Clair Co., AL by 1820. This Andrew CADDEL is my direct
ancestor (gggg grqndfather).
Is there anyone working on this CALDWELL family?
Bill Caddell
Granbury, TX
Wow! Patti I am sure that U never imagined in any sense of the word, the
number of responses that this holiday special would bring. Maybe this
could be considered being allowed for other holidays too?
I haven't recognized anything that helps me, but I enjoy each & every
e-mail that arrives in my e-mail that relates to Caldwell.
My Samuel Jesse Caldwell was from Valley Junction, Polk CO Iowa. I
remember my father mentioning being Pa Dutch quite often so I wonder if
maybe that is where my line started?
As I stated I read every message with much anticipation. The possibility
that a hit might be in the making, while at the same time not let down
too much because I enjoy reading about other Caldwell lines too.
I say thank U Patti, for all that U do to make this possible for the rest
of us!
I must also comment, that I am at this time of the year very jealous of
the nice weather that U R enjoying in Florida! LOL Being from the Great
NorthWet I am sure many of U will understand! LOL
Happy & safe Holidays to each & every one of U!
Marv Caldwell

Merry Christmas Y'all,
Jim
There was a Benjamin F. CALDWELL who fought for the CSA in the Missouri 1st
Cavalry.
Can anyone tell me where Benjamin lived at the time? Where he ended up? He
is not in the later 1880 Soundex and a county-by-county search of Missouri
in 1870 and 1880 Census enumerations is something I'd like to avoid.
How might I locate him?

Merry Christmas, Caldwell cousins:
I'd like to know if anyone has information on Andrew and Alexander CALDWELL
of Berkeley Co (W) VA. There was an Andrew CALDWELL buried there in 1758.
Was he father of Andrew and Alexander who lived there during the 1770-80
period?
Do they descend from Andrew CALDWELL and Margaret TRAIN of Kent Co DE? Or
from Alexander CALDWELL and Mary COLWELL of IRE and PA? Or from another
branch of the family? Any ideas?

My name is Melanie and I live in Moorpark CA, just north or Los Angeles. I
have two children, ages 14 & 15 yrs. so I must compete for time on the
computer with them, as well as my husband! :-) I am the "cousin" that Norma
referred to in her message. I have been researching my family tree for about
the past two years via internet & continued to be amazed by the wealth of
information that I have been able to find.
Regarding the CALDWELL surname, I had very little info. on this branch of my
family tree, until I was contacted via email by Norma. Our common ancestor is
Jane CALWELL, who is my 3xgreat-grandmother. Her second husband, John HAYDEN,
is my 3xgreat-grandfather.
Norma, I just received the book "Genealogies of the First Settlers of the
Passaic Valley, NJ" - can't wait to read through it! You have been a great
help to me & so kind to share info on this branch of the family with me.
Wishing you a healthly 1999,

<<My name is Norma and I live in LaVerne, CA, not too far from Los Angeles.
I have had one Caldwell on my family tree for many years - Jane Caldwell who
was married to Anthony Danser. This year, thanks to the 1880 census, I
discovered that her parents were born in NJ. First time I knew I had any NJ
relatives! I then discovered a book about the Passaic area in NJ, and found it
hard to believe when I found her parents, grandparents and great grandparents,
with their children, listed in the book! So that was a giant step forward.
However, that's all I know about them. According to the book, James came here
from Ireland in 1723. The family stayed in NJ until "my" Robert moved to OH,
then IN.
I read all of the Caldwell mail that comes through, but have yet to find
anyone researching Caldwells in NJ. I was very happy to find one cousin who
descended from Jane's second marriage. Is anyone out there doing any research
on this branch of the family?>>
Hi!
Just another Sharon here <grin>! My Mom is a Caldwell from OK,
and her parents were both born in southern MO (Caldwell & Hicks).
I have family members on both sides of mine, and both sides of my
husbands who have given me information that has kept me busy entering
it for some time. I got my new computer last spring. So I am a beginner
when it comes to doing my own research.
So far there are over 9,000 names from the primary families of:
CALDWELL, HICKS, EDABURN, TRAIL, TAYLOR, HEY,
BAKER, and WHITE. They go back to about 1720 in NC, SC,
TN, OH, PA, and then to SCOTLAND (so I am told); and to
about 1600 in England on my husband's father's side (DEANE).
I use Family Tree Maker, which is a pretty impressive program.
Caldwell is the most active list I am on...and I read each note
with anticipation. Once I get a little organized I will begin to
seek verification of the information and will try to fill in the
gaps...and there are many!
I have met three distant cousins (EDABURN) online: Iowa,
Oregon and California.
This really is fun!

Wow! I love the response that we're getting with our holiday
wishes. I'm Patti, your listmistress who was born in Armstrong
Co., PA. Moved to Delaware at age 13 & stayed there until 6
years ago, when husband #3, Raymond & I moved to Naples,
FL. We love it here, even in the heat of the summer. Between us
we have 5 children: Laurie, Ron, Ray III, Angela & Gabe. All are
married except Ray III & Gabe. We have 3 grandchildren, ranging
in ages from 11 through 18 on Christmas Day. I started genealogy
3 years ago, when I decided to try to find my deceased mother's birth
family. I won't give all the details right now, but I did find her birth
family and gained lots of 1st cousins and it happened on the internet
using a mailing list similar to this one. Since then, I've become an
addict. Last summer I spent 10 days in Salt Lake City & could have
spent 6 months <g>. But, seeing as how I don't want another divorce,
thought I should come home. My husband is very understanding about
this addiction but he prays that I won't find another ancestor's unmarked
grave. If I do, he says he'll sell our jewelry store & open a cemetery marker
store; it would be cheaper! I'm sending some of my CALDWELL research
notes. I have much more dating back to the 1600's, but haven't had time
to organize it. Another New Year's resolution.....KEEP MY OFFICE
NEAT & ORDERLY...

Hi Sharon -
50 miles NW of Phoenix is probably pretty close to Wickenburg. We
might not be cousins, but at least we're neighbors. My wife, Donna,
and I live in Phoenix.
I don't understand if you mean an obsession takes more, or less time
than a full time job.
I, too, have Caldwells from KY. My gr.gr.gr. grandmother was (I
believe) from KY, as are many of my Sherrill, Key, Palmer, Fox and
Bass ancestors.
My gr.gr.gr. grandmother was Mary Steel Caldwell, b. 8/1773, who, in
1796, married Henry Palmer (b. abt.1775 in SC) in Mercer Co., KY. I
knew nothing about her until someone else on this Caldwell list
recently advised me that they believe Mary was the daughter of Robert
Caldwell b. 1732 and Mary Logan. He also advised that Robert Caldwell
was the son of John Caldwell (b. 1683 in Ireland) and Margaret
Phillips. If any of this connects to you, lets compare notes.
In the meantime, please have a warm and joyous holiday. I look
forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Don Sherrill
