I am new to the list. My cousin talked to some CALDWELLs in Tn and was
told: William and Emily CALDWELL of Tennessee were the parents of Robert
P. born (c)1840, Thomas, born (c) 1842, Jason, born (c) 1844 and John,
born(c) 1846. They also said William and Emily gave up one of their
children in 1844 because of hard times. I am trying to trace Robert P.
CALDWELL, born 1840. There has been a "family roumor" that CALDWELL was
the birth name of my Ggrandfather, Robert P. STAGGS, born September 13,
1840 and that he was adopted by STAGGS. I am trying to document my
Ggfather's parents. Please contact rena(a)texramp.net Any information
appreciated. Thank you for your time and help.

Do you have a Soloman Caldwell listed in the book. He died around 1910 in
Del Rio, Tennessee? I'm trying to identifiy his parents -- without much
success. Sol would have been born around 1850 in Tennessee. Census records
state his father was born in NC, but I don't have a name. Sol's son Oscar
ended up in Wise and Russell County, Va in 1915. Any info on Soloman would
be appreciated.

Hi Cousin!!!!!
Thank you so much for emailing all of us about this!!!! It sounds like you have
done a lot of research on
this line. It is wonderful that you would share it with us! Speaking for
myself, this was my "brick wall.
I have not been able to find out anything about my Martha Caldwell. Now, all of
a sudden, there are
several generations worth of information. That's what makes the Internet so
great -- that you can
make contact with people that you otherwise would not ever meet or know about.
Also, I think, this is
a great example of how well these mailing lists work.
Anyway, your information has been very helpful so far and I REALLY look forward
to hearing more from
you!!!!!! Nice to meet you, Cuz. :)
Thank you!

Hi,
I would like someone who is in this line to have the book. See if you can
connect your boss to it by what I sent or what you know. Try the addresses
I posted in e-mail to buy book. One of those addresses should be able to
supply it to you. I will keep your address in case no one else wants it in
the line of the book. vmw At 06:53 AM 10/28/98 PST, you wrote:

Hello. I also descend thru Mary by way of her husband, Beverly Mann. He is
how I hook up to the Caldwells. About the book, my memory fails me but there
seems to me to have been a book of that sort. Tell you what my sisters
memory is better that mine, maybe she can tell you if you don't already
know. her address is Lycurgus(a)bluemarble.net
I live next door to her and it won't be any problem. We talk genealogy all
the time.

To you who have expressed interest in the "original Caldwells" legend.
Back in the 60s, a Mrs. Harold Walters of New Ross Indiana put together a
history of those Caldwells who immigrated from Ireland, then spread through
PA, KY and beyond. She included the well-known "brothers" story and had
better sources than others I have seen. It does not have anything on the
"Cub Creek" Caldwells who settled in Philadelphia and moved to southern VA
and later to NC and the south. They are not the family detailed in Archie
Caldwell's book, either.
The list includes the family of Robert Caldwell (1757-1845) the
Revolutionary War soldier who m1 Sarah Fryer, m2 Sarah McVey, was born in
Fayette Co PA, lived in VA and Nicholas Co KY, and died in Rush Co IN.
A Caldwell relative of Robert's found the Walters history, mimeographed and
faded, in her attic in Rush County IN. I retyped it and sent it to a couple
of libraries in Indiana. I can't vouch for its accuracy, but she obviously
worked hard on it and mentioned her sources, which were mostly oral ones.
Mrs Walters herself died some years ago.
I can send you Mrs Walter's history, which runs to 10-15 pages, depending
on font, if you send me a request directly to jw_pr_brown(a)compuserve.com.
I'll send it in FTP format, which will retain the indentations, margins,
etc., since it is in outline form. You can open FTP files with any word
processor, such as Word, WordPerfect, or even WordPad which comes with
Windows or Simple Text that comes with Macs. If I send it as "plain text"
such as an E-mail attached file, it will probably be difficult to read.
