Hi Ken: Thanks for the information, I know what you mean by the apparent
contradictions in census reports, they sure have caused me to go on some wild
goose chases in the past on some of the other families, I've been
researching, I'll let you know if I find out anything. Thanks again, Ted
Richard
Let see how to start.
Lucy Caldwell Moores LCT daughter of Rebecca Bonner Caldwell sister of
Dr. William Bonner who were the daughter and son of Betsey Hester who
married Jesse Bonner in Granville Dist in North Carolina. They moved to
Williamson co. TN then to Linclon co.
Elizabeth (Betsey) was the daughter of Joseph Hester and Elizabeth
Parker who were married July 4, 1751 in Granville NC.
There is a will dated Feb 24, 1802 proved nov 1802 Granville Dist N.C.
I would like to know more about this family if you have anything.
Ken

Hi,
I do not beleive that my John B. Caldwell was the one that got 20 years
for horse stealing, for gosh sakes he was 76 years old at the time.
My problem is that I have lost him after his service in the Civil War
along with his 3 sons in Clacks 3rd.
I have been able to find the other Caldwell familys in the area birth,
marriage and even where they are burried.
My hope is that others like myself had done research on the Caldwell
family that might just have my guy in Timbucktoo TX or something.
Ken
Hi Ted,
My John B. Caldwell claims to have been born in Ireland in 1799.
His daughter Lucy Caldwell Moore says on the federal cencus that he was
born in N.C.
I sure we fit somewhere but, at this time we are not in luck.
Ken
Does anyone know how to find out information on prisons in 1875?
Where did they send someone from LCT for 20 years for horse stealing?
Most of you already know that he is not yours, but If this is your John
Caldwell fess up so that I can move on.
Margaret, do you think that there might have been a news article written
on this that would give me a lead? I am told that it was in 1875. My
John Caldwell would have to have been 76 years old when he was sentenced
to the 20 years
If this was my John B. Caldwell they could have printed a juicy story
that would have embarassed his wife's family, "the Bonners". It appears
that Dr. William Bonner and his brother, Dr. Moses Bonner, were highly
respected men in the community.
His daughter was married to John D.L. Moores who was a large land owner
on Richland Creek in LCT which borders Giles county at Cornersville.
John Moores and his brother, Alexander Moores, had large holdings on
Richland Creek next to where the Burgess family lived.
Hi Bob,
I sorry that your g grandfather lost his horse in LCT. It must have
been a Tennessee Walker.
Was the horse ever returned to your g grandfather?
Maybe we can find out and get the blood line on that horse as well. It
must have been some horse for JOHN CALDWELL to get 20 years in the
slammer Iin 1875.
If we could get the transcript of the Trial I'm sure it would say what
color the horse was and who owned the horse.
Do you know where we can get the prison records? We might be able to
find out what color the horse was that way.
I don't know if the statute of limitations has run out on this, but if
we can find out which JOHN CALDWELL of Giles County TN did the deed, we
might be able to get restitution if the horse was not returned to you g.
grandfather.
Ken

My name is Ted Richard and I have been researching my wife's father's family,
the Caldwell's in Haywood Co. NC. I have definitely traced his ancestry back
to Thomas Caldwell (Born Nov 1824) and Rany Ball (born in TN May 1829, census
info suggests that she was born in NC). They were married in Haywood County
NC on 10 March 1857. Thomas's father was also named Thomas(born about 1790)
and his wife's name may have been Anny according to 1850Census.The elder
Thomas possibly had at least one brother James(born about 1785) and possibly
William (born about 1791) Any help will be appreciated. Ted Richard

I found this record in the LCT Pioneers Vol. II NO. 1 page 25.
I have a certified copy from the State Archive in Nashville.
Chancery Court Records of LCT
p. 112-116
John B. Caldwell
vs
James Deery
........John B. Caldwell of LCT .. sometime in year 1826 he entered into
partnership with James Deery of purpose of selling & retailing
merchanize in Town of Fayettville, LCT ...6 April 1832 business stopped
...Answer of James Deery filed 26 Aug 1835.
**Notes of uncle William Floyd Given to Charles E. Gowen 1904 in his
84th year.
Shelbyvilles 1st merchant was James Deery and his goods were brought
from Philadelphia and Baltimore on Pack horses and mules.
There were only 29 Caldwell familys in the entire state of Tennessee in
1820. It should not be that difficult to do this.
I wish I had paid more attention to the note I took from Goodspeeds
History of TN. I don't even have the year that a John Caldwell was sent
to prison for being a "Horse Thief" I think it was after the Civil War.
Does anyone have access to this book? Does anyone know about the prison
at that time and where they would be sent for 20 years?

LOL My Caldwell's are from Iowa. I cannot verify anything past my G father
Samual Jesse Caldwell. He was from Valley junction which is now named West
Des Moines.
He was a roofer as far as I know and dad always mentioned how he helped
build Valley Junction. I have yet to hear from anyone with an Iowa connection
to the Caldwell family!!
Thanks!
Marv
People have told me that they are afraid to look back into their familys
history because they might find a horse thief.
What do you do when you suspect that you have found one? I only know
one way, so here goes.
John B. CALDWILL b.1799 (? Ireland) (?Tennessee) He shows up as head of
household in 1820 age 20-30 with another person the same age. In 1830
he is the only Caldwell in linclon Co TN and is a neighbor of the Jesse
BONNER family. He get married Rebecca BONNER who is the sister of Dr.
William BONNER a wealthy planter and Dr. Moses BONNER.
They raise a family of three sons and a only daughter, my g grandmother
Lucy CaldwIll MOORES.
In 1860 John was 61 his son William was 27, son James H. was 24, and
Moses CALDWILL age 16 or 17. They were all in the War and I have found
the units they were in. I have not found that any of them applied for a
pension. He was in business in the town of Fayettville.
I lost them, I can't find a will. I can't find where they are burried.
The last record I have is when Rebecca Bonner CALDWELL is in a civil
suit along with her brother Dr. William BONNER in settlement of her
fathers estate.
I have an old note from Goodspeed history page 756. I did not record the
date.
I did not think much of it at the time, but here it is.
JOHN CALDWELL 20 years Horse Thief
WILLIAM CALDWELL 8 years Horse Thief
Can someone point me in the right direction here? If you need
information on a Caldwell, I think that I have a record on all of them
in every County in TN from early tax records, marriage records, wills
and cencus records through 1860.
Ken
