PJ, thanks for your responses and for your ongoing work on the Calderwood line! I'm
fairly certain that the James Calderwood(s) who are part of my line did not die at the
Battle of Brandywine. A note I got from the Huntingdon County Historical Society suggests
that the James born abt 1760 died most likely in Warriors Mark, PA in 1806 (at least he
stopped appearing in tax records after that year). George Washington Calderwood was the
second son of James and Catherine so that book that you mention he wrote would be
interesting to see if you can dig it up. GW was the younger brother of my 3xGF John
Calderwood who died in 1849 and is buried in Arch Springs, PA. It is plausbile that the
Catherine you mention was my James wife, since the indentured servent angle seems to make
sense. James supposedly came to Philadelphia partly to escape a harsh stepfather (info per
HCHS) so he and Catherine may have been naturally attracted to one another - although I do
like the idea that he may !
have left the British Army and moved to the wilderness of PA but that doesn't explain
how he was able to meet and marry Catherine (who I have as a Catherine MacDonald, not a
Catherine Porter). The real problem seems to be one of too many men with the name James so
tracing back beyond the one that settled in Warriors Mark may prove next to impossible.
Feel free to email me at back9boy(a)aol.com if you find more. Thanks, Dick
