Bernie, I was having a second look at the cemetery listing for the Greeneville Cemetery
and there are lots of interesting Calder connections in there. For example, there is
buried there a William H. Calder who died 10 Mar 1879 at age 71 and Philathea his wife,
who died 28 Ap 1864 at age 57. Further down the listing is a listing for William Dunn
Calder, born 1835, died 1919, "son of William H., grandson of Joseph, great-grandson
of John Calder, Linlithgow, Scotland."
So it would appear that Alexander had a brother William and that their father Joseph was a
son of one John Calder. Alexander also had a sister Ann, wife of Joseph Newton, who died
at age 22 in 1825.
There is also a puzzling grave that reads "In Memory of Jean Newton, a native of
Scotland, and relict of Joseph Newton, d. January 16, 1833, aged 84y 2 m, erected by
Joseph Calder." Whoever she was, she was born about 1749 if the dates were read
correctly.
Was Jean Newton Joseph's own mother? Or was she perhaps the mother-in-law of
Joseph's daughter Ann who was the wife of one Joseph Newton? Ann died 25 May 1825 at
age 22.
