I've "rescued" an old photograph identified only as "CALDER" which
was taken
at the Benj. F. Jones Studio in Providence, Rhode Island. The photograph
was taken sometime in the 1870's with the young man in the photograph most
likely in his 20's or 30's at the time it was taken. In addition to the
name, someone has written "Assistant to Prof. of Chemistry" on the front of
the photograph.
The photograph was recovered along with a group of photographs belonging to
the Class of 1878 from Brown University including both students and faculty.
Based on that knowledge I was able to determine that Edwin Eddy CALDER was
an Assistant Chemistry Prof. at Brown University from 1874 into the 1880's
and have gathered the following information regarding Edwin and his family:
Edwin Eddy CALDER was b. 17 Mar 1853 in Providence, RI to parents Julia
Frances EDDY (b. 9 Jan 1828 in Providence, RI) and John Lewis CALDER (b. 8
Apr 1824). Edwin was one of 7 children, all boys born to this couple
including, John Barnard; Edwin Eddy; Louis Herbert; Charles Granville; Mary
Adelaide; William James; and Heman Lincoln CALDER, all born between 1849 and
1864 in Providence, RI.
Edwin married Ella Ann Theresa ELSBREE (b. 1853 dau of Hiram W. & Arathusa
ELSBREE) on 23 Dec 1875 in Providence, RI.
