Searching for information: John Calder family of Glengarry Co., Ontario Canada
Our Calder Family line has been a bit difficult to flush out they seem to want to stay
undiscovered despite our best efforts. A distance cousin and I have been trying to find
evidence connecting the dots in this line. I will give as much of a recap as possible and
if any of this sounds familiar any assistance would be most appreciated.
The following information came as the result of an interview with Christie's grandson
who died in 1982; My Calder line begins with a woman identified as Christie Ann Calder
born about 1840 in Scotland, as the story goes she came to the United States at the age of
3. Her father / mother and sister. She was reported to have four sisters they are as
follows:
Elizabeth A. b. 1839 in Scotland married James J. Smith Gouverneur NY
Janet b. 1843 in the US marries a Morgan
Charlotte b. 1850 in US no other information
Nina b. 1852 in US married Charles Fry divorced him and
married Henry Quackenbush
Subsequent research has found that Christie never went by that name as an adult, she is
found in the 1860 New York Census in the home of the sister of her future husband
identified as Ann Calder. She married Joesph Lake b. 1832 between 1860-62 and a
relatively consistent census pattern is found for both of them up to their deaths. Her
death certificate identifies her as Anna Lake and newspaper articles of the day are
similarly identified.
Elizabeth A. married James J. Smith and lived her life in Gouverneur her death certificate
identifies her as born in Scotland her parents names were John Calder and Elizabeth Forber
or Forbes.
Janet there is no information for.
Charlotte is identified in the 1870 Census as working in Gouverneur as is her sister
Nina. In 1880 Charlotte is believe to be listed in the town of Antwerp NY under the name
Lottie no other information has been found.
Nina b. 1852 she was identified in the 1870 in Gouverneur as a domestic, by 1880 she had
married and divorced Charles Fry and had one child by him Ella Fry. Nina married Henry
Quackenbush who died in 1883 they had two children Peter Emmett and Clara E.
She died in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1896. It is believe that she may have live with or
been working with or for some relative in Michigan prior to her death. An undated letter
adds more information to the puzzle. This was written by the grandson of Nina (Calder)
Quackenbush and identifies her as having "several sisters, Jennie, Lottie, Kate
etc" and one brother who worked in Canada but was never heard from.
John Calder of the Calder Family list was able to provide us with Census information from
Lancaster Glengarry Co., Ontario Canada 1851 which identified the following information.
John Calder 42 YOA Blacksmith b. Scotland
Elizabeth 38 b. Scotland
Elizabeth A. 14 b. Scotland
Christianna 12 b. Scotland
Jennet 9 b. Canada
Catherine 7 b. Canada
Alexander 5 b. Canada
Charlot 3 b. Canada
Sarah Ann 1 b. Canada
There are several ties to these people and our direct information that make it more than
coincidence, and I believe this is the same family that has been previously outline. In
this circumstance John age 42 died in 1852.
My gr gr gr grandmother Chritie Ann was first seen in the census information in the US in
1860. Christianna is not seen in any further Canadian census. Elizabeth A. is the oldest
daughter according to my information and is the oldest in the Canadian family she is found
in the 1861 census but not after that. My family line shows Elizabeth married 1863-64 and
she is not seen in the Canadian Census after 1861. This list of these ties goes on.
What I'm looking for is any family lines from Catherine, Jennet, Alexander basically
anyone on the list, which might help prove or disprove my hypothesis.
There are more connections I could probably go one for 10 pages with comparisons but any
other information that could be located or provided would be much appriecated.
