Hi Steve. The very meager information I have on Alexander Calder in my
family line is that he was born in 1800 in Glasgow, Scotland, and died June
2, 1861, in Clinton Co., Dewitt, Michigan. He is buried in the Dewitt,
Michigan cemetary. Alexander lived in Scotland until about the age of 20
when he camt to America in about 1820-22, landing in either Boston or New
York City. In his movement west he worked as a hired man for farmers. He
met and married Soloma Rowland in 1826. She was born in 1805 in Herkimer
Co., NY, and died June 09, 1861, also in Clinton Co., Dewitt, Michigan. The
notes I have from my Mother indicate that their first child, Mary Ann, was
born on January 30, 1828, in Genessee County, NY. However, this child is
not mentioned in the "History of Clinton County, Michigan" book I researched
in the Michigan History Library in Lansing, MI. Both accounts agree that
this Alexander Calder was one of the earliest pioneers to arrive in the
Villiage of Dewitt, in the then "Michigan Territory." His children were the
first recorded births in the township with Catherine born in 1838. All
three children, Catherine, William (age 10 at the time) and a newborn infant
all died in 1841 and were the first recorded deaths. Alexander was an
officer of the township and served as a school inspector and highway
commissioner. A microfiche record (#2991), I found in the "Pioneer Records"
section of the Michigan Historical Library Microfiche file indicated the
Alexander and Soloma had four children: Mary Ann, James A., Caroline and
Oliver (no mention of William).
Obviously, my research into this branch of the Calder line is a "work in
progress". Most of the information I have came from the "History of Clinton
County, Michigan," as well as some personal notes my Mother left me.
Unfortunately, It doesn't look like this is going to be of much help to you.
