Hello ALL,
To keep ya'll informed on the Project, there are now a
organizational and testing structure in place.
I previously briefly mentioned to you this testing project.
It apparently is coming around. I have requested a test kit
to submit my DNA (swab sample from inside your mouth). I
will be one of the representatives from the Andrew CADDEL
line (was in Orange Co., NC in 1754). I will be coordinator
for the CADDELL/CADELL/CADDEL groups and others if you like.
Several volunetters will be representing their family lines.
I would like to get at least one representative of each
family group in the Study. I do not have a male
representative of the James Banks CADDELL line. I have not
had contact with other in the CALDER, CADLE, or CADWELL
lines. The Project Group would like several individuals from
each family line.
We must pay for our own testing. The Project has contracted
with a DNA firm in California and the cost for the paternal
testing (Y DNA) will be $175. Maternal line (mt DNA) testing
can also be requested for an additional charge.
There will be a database of the DNA markers for the Scottish
Clans and Septs.
The Scottish clans are very unique in that the Clans have
been identified and family relationships tracked for
hundreds of years. Some Clan family have documented
histories stretching back to before 1000 AD.
So this leads to some interesting possibilities of
identifying current clan and sept family members and
determining if the Scottish ancestry line can be identified.
It turns out that a couple of factors make this
a very interesting study for the Clans to be
involved in.
A: The mtDNA passes down from mother to daughter
only. So the matriarch of the family becomes
clearly identified and traceable. Scottish
history is one of the few in the world where
female lineage was often documented. Note that
non paternity events don't occur in this DNA
since obviously the mother knows her daughter
is her offspring.
B: The Y DNA passes from father to son. There we can
again provide a clear line of potential coordination
between the written documentation and the DNA
markers.
I expect good things out of this project.
