Irene,
I am having a problem sending to your email address so I'll send my reply through
this site. Try contacting me at my email address below.
Thanks!
John
I have been researching the various Calder families who resided in Ontario during the
1800's. It's through that research that I came across your family in Elora.
Although I am not connected to your Calders (at least not in the last 200 years) I would
be interested in exchanging information about their family history!
I have attached information that details everything I know (or think I know) about John
& Christian. I've had no serious problems tracing most of their daughters, but
several of the sons seem to disappear in about the 1860's or '70's. Can you
fill me in on any of the details in the later lives of these 3 sons? I am especially
interested in events involving the lives of their sons, Alexander, John & William.
Thanks!
George Alexander Calder, a descendant, is also involved in tracing your Calders. I
haven't been in touch with him in several years, but you may still be able to contact
him through this website where he has a posting:

I hope to hear from you again!
Regards,
John

April 6, 1830 in Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Profession: - Weaver in the 1851, '71, '81 & '91 censuses.
- Freeholder (landowner) in the Wellington County Directory 1871-2.
Place of Residence: - Halifax, Nova Scotia for their first year in Canada, before moving
to Ontario.
- Bon-Accord settlement (later named Elora), Upper Nichol Township in February / 1837.
- Lot 11, Con. 13, Nichol Twp. on the November 20, 1838 birth record of his son,

- Wellington County in the 1871 census.
- Con. 1, West Garafraxa Twp., Wellington County in the Wellington County Directory

Immigration Record: Based on the census records of his four eldest daughters it appears
that the family immigrated to Canada in the time between the births of, Christina and Mary
Ann. This makes the date sometime between October 25, 1834 and December 16, 1836.
- They arrived in Nichol Township in 1835.
Notes: - John and his wife Christian were 2 of the 9 founding members of Knox Presbyterian
Church in Elora, Ontario. They figure prominently in the early history of this church.
- His religious denomination is recorded as being Plymouth Brethren in the 1871
census, and Bretheren in the 1881 census.
- Another researcher records that John, may have had a son named Paul, born about 1838. I
have found no records of him and think that this event is unlikely and requires
verification.
