HHello Cousin!
I write from Caithness and about a mile from James old home.
The wedding ring that he gave Jane is still in existence aand is held by my cousin who has
suitably tiny fingers. He was called "Red Jamie" - his red hair being inherited
by some family members as highlights. He was the son of Cecilia Cormack born in the parish
of Walls, Orkney Islands in 1768.( Walls is the southern part of the island of Hoy and is
the nearest to the mainland. She married Alexander Calder about 1790 but we can't be
certain of marriage date. James gravestone is in the churchyard of Dunnet Kirk and is
buried with Cecilia. It was broken about 8 years ago in a storm - when it fell an insert
of marble with his name on was blown away. It is recorded in Cowper and Ross Caithness
Monumental Gravestoness pre 1855 but I saw it as well. I am descended from James son
Sinclair (my great grandfather) Did you know that Sinclair was sail master and carpenter
on the SS Liverpool - the biggest clipper of her time and his brother Thomas was the
master. John became the first c!
oxswain of the Huna lifeboat and with his wife went on to own the John O'Groats Hotel
. Many family members are in the area still. Kindest regards Angela, daughter of Annie
Coghill, daughter of Annie Calder, daughter of Sinclair Gunn Calder, son of James Calder
and Jane Trail Gunn.
PS Jane was daughter of Barbara Shearer and Donald Gunn
