Message Board Post:
Greatly confused by Robert Johnston Calder. Scottish Register of births have several
children being born to Robert Johnston Calder during the period 1864-1874 in Whitburn,
West Lothian, SCT. However, these registers show the children being born variously of RJC
and either Margaret Sommerville and Margaret Adams.
It's as if 1) RJC were having children by two women (unlikely but not impossible in
Victorian UK), or 2) there are two RJCs in the same small village of Whitburn married
Margarets at the same time and having children at the same time.
The children's naming patterns are congruent.
Then, in the 1881 census, a grandmother Elizabeth Fell Calder (widow of Charles Calder)
shows several grandchildren living with her. I've identified the oldest Charles as the
son of RJC and Margaret Sommerville -- so far so good. But then there's the next
grandson living with Elizabeth -- William -- who appears to be the son of RJC and Margaret
Adams, per the Registers.
So, anyone with any knowledge of Robert Johnston Calder and his (their?) life, please help
me out with this.
Best regards,
Bruce Martin
