Joined today, posting my first message. Have checked the List Archives
and don't find a suitable subject for Alexander CAIRNS, who died aboard
the Titanic when it sank April 15, 1912.
A family story said my Grandmother, Agnes BRYDEN was engaged to a man
named 'Alex' who died when the Titanic sank. I always thought this to
be only that.....a family story. Recently, I've gotten a picture of
this man and understand a postcard exists that he sent to Agnes. My
Aunt is trying to find this postcard which she safely tucked away for
safekeeping. That can be a bad thing to do ! I want to see the
Postmark for a date and see if he signed his full name. They were both
residing in Scotland in 1912.
While she's looking for the card, I thought I'd ask this List if anyone
knows of this Alexander CAIRNS. He was born Alexander Milne CAIRNS on
April 19, 1883 in Kinfauns, Perthshire, Scotland to Wm CAIRNS & Margaret
MILNE. Books published on the Titanic say the Alexander CAIRNS who died
was the son of a Wm and a Margaret and that his middle initial was
indeed M, and that he was 28 at his death. So far, so good.
The Archives of this list don't mention the word Titanic in any year.
Anyone know of a way I can further look for this family ? Have joined
the Perthshire list and will ask there. Hopefully newspaper accounts
would have mentioned a native who died on the ship.

Your note interested me because my James Thomas Cairns was born in
Perthshire also. He married Mary Young in about 1849. Five month later he
came to the US. Mary followed about 15 months later, followed later by her
family. I have not been able to trace it back farther. I know James and
Mary had a son, John, born in Scotland. Evem James's obit did not name his
parents. I feel James must have had other family in Scotland. Could you
send me information on the "Perthshire list" as I have not heard of it.
