Hello Gavin,
thank you for your reply, and no, I didn't have that Jane Cairns, but I
don't think it is mine.
I will just have to keep looking.
Thanks anyway
Ruth Edwards

Ruth Edwards is looking for aa Janet Cairns,
I cannot help in your search for the birth of Janet CAIRNS around 1800 in
any particular way, but I do have a loose/unconnected Jane CAIRNS.
She appears as a daughter of my GGG Grandfather John Cairns in the baptism
register of Berwick, Golden Square (Presbyterian) church where there is an
entry:
"11 Nov. 1798 Jane daughter of John Cairns, Baker in Berwick and
Margaret,
his wife. Born in the Greens 28 Oct."
You might be aware that such Scottish-minded births and baptisms in
Berwick
upon Tweed often show up as having "happened" in Paxton
just over the
border
in Scotland as well.
Apart from her parentage I know little of Jane herself, and, as far as I
know, she did not have a brother Alexander (her siblings were Margaret
b.1794, John b.1796, William b.1801, James b.1803 and Robert b.1806) but
Greenlaw is only about 4 miles out of Berwick upon Tweed on the road to
Dunse - certainly within courting distance. Her brother William just might
have been the William Cairns who married Christian Millar in Ayton in 1834
and had sons Alexander b.1835 and Thomas b.1836, but I do not think so. In
my forlorn search for a link I learned quite a bit about them and their
families but I do not think they are "mine".
If any of that could be of interest to you, just let me know and I'll be
happy to send details to you.
Gavin Cairns
