Is there no one out there descended from Douglas Carns of Paramus, Bergen County, New
Jersey? He was the father of William Cairns, merchant of New York, born 24 Nov 1777, or
Cornelia Carns/Cairns born 06 Sep 1772, who married Matthias Ackerman in New York on 24
Aug 1800, or Dorothy Carns/Cairns, born 24 Apr 1775?
Douglas may have been the son of William and Cornelia Cairns, who also had a daughter,
Sarah, who married Isaac Van Blarcom.
The following information is all that I have discovered about this branch of the family,
one of the earliest Cairns lines, who emmigrated from Scotland for religious reasons, no
doubt, given their attendance at Dutch Reformed churches in the early 1700s.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Board of Proprietors of the Eastern Division of New Jersey on19 August 1763 executed
lease at Romopock to William Cairns, lot no. 164, 108 acres at 20 s.
William Cairns, probably the Williams Cairns referenced above, married Cornelia -?-.
William and Cornelia Cairns had a daughter, Sarah, who married Isaac Van Blarcom (he was
bp. Hackensack Ref Dutch Ch on 9 May 1736). They probably also had a son, Douglas Cairns,
who married Geesje Van Buskirk.
William and Cornelia witnessed the will of David Ackerman, dated 13 May 1760 (proved 25
Nov 1760). William also made the inventory of the estate.
William also witnessed the will dated 9 Apr 1751 (proved 20 Aug 1751) of Johannes
Ackerman. William also made the inventory of the estate.
William also witnessed the will dated 26 May 1758 (proved 27 Mar 1759) of Thomas Ackerman.
William also made the inventory of the estate.
Others of the surname who were in the area before 1800 include:
David Cairns (possibly son of William and Cornelia, above),who married Elizabeth Van
Voorhees. They had children:
----- William Cairns, bp. 14 Mar 1790 Paramus Dutch Ref C.(mother's name in bp. record
is Elizabeth; no surname given for her)
----- Cornelia Carns, b. 13 Sep, bp. 2 Nov 1794 Totowa Ref Dutch Ch (wit: De Vader en
Moeder)
Douglas Cairns (possibly son of William and Cornelia), married Geesje Van Buskirk
(Boskerk). He is likely the "Duglas Cairn" listed in the Franklin Township
Rateables for 1778 and Jan-Feb 1779 with (1778) 225 acres, 5 horses, 8 cattle. Children of
Douglas Cairns & Geesje Van Buskirk:
----- Cornelia Cairns, bp. 6 Sep 1772 Paramus Ref Dutch Ch; m. (poss.) (as Cornelia
Kearns) 20 Apr 1791 Schraalenburgh Ref Dutch Ch, Lawrence Van Horn.
----- Dorothy Cairns, bp. 24 Apr 1775
----- William Cernes, b. 24 Nov 1777; bp. 11 Jan 1778 Totowa Ref Dutch Ch (wit: "De
