"Cairns" in common. My line if through James Thomas Cairns who came

Scotland around 1849, first to New York and then on to Illinois. You
mention that.
I don't think so, but we might. My memory is not as good as it used to
be. My Cairns are from the Borders around Hawick and Jedburgh.
What is this Scottish naming sequence?
son 1: father's father
son 2: mother's father
son 3: father
dau 1: mother's mother
dau 2; father's mother
dau 3: mother
It's balanced, and it might have saved a lot of arguments. The third
level are more optional, and familiar names like Nancy or Jessie often
sneak in for the daughters. It's a big help most of the time, but you
do end up with a lot of people with the same given names in a family.
Good luck.
