Hi Nancy: I am still around and will try to attach some information I have just entered on
my computer. It is very disjointed and not completely sourced because I have all these odd
papers Ihave collected over the past 30 years and I don't recall where I got some of
it. I have a feeling that we are somehow connected to John Swindler's Harriet and
Joseph. I don't know if he is still around. Note the interesting info from the book
History of Richland County, Ohio which inaccurately lists a Richard married to Harriet. I
know that is not correct but there was a Richard Cairns around who was about the same age
who may have been a brother??
Notes for Joseph Cairns
Was in Richland County soon after surrender of Hull in War of 1812. Came to Mansfield
from Zanesville, Muskingum County in 1813. In 1820 there was a John Cairns in Zanesville
and a Richard Cairns in Zanesville. The Richard Cairns was a private under Lieutenant
Joseph Cairns in War of 1812 in Captain William Raynold's Company. Corporal Richard
Cairns listed as in Joseph Cairns Company from Dec 12, 1812 to April 12, 1813. Wonder if
this is a brother.
Have letters from Van Horne to Worthington in 1811 mentioning Joseph Cairns and his war
service.
Purchased many lots in down town area. Log home and store at northwest corner of Third
and Main Streets where Indian Chief Mood once threw a Tomahawk at him--landed in door
frame above head. Cairns often threw Mooney out of the store for drunkenness.
Sold store in 1818 and cabin to McFall family and moved across street to Miller Corner.
Living with Robert Cairns in 1850 Ohio census but not in 1860. Will entered in Court June
16, 1855
Contract for building of the office for Secretary of State and State Treasurer awarded to
James Hamson and Joseph Cairns during summer or April 10 of that year with completion date
Dec. 10, 1810.
In 1820 census a Joseph Cairns in Richland County lists Joseph Cairns--2 males under 10, 1
male 10-16, 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-45 and 1 male 26-45. Don't know who one of
the males under 10 is or who the male 10-16 is. In 1830 was in Columbus, Franklin County
(Gateway to West). Harriet is listed in 1830 census in Mansfield but can find no census
record anywhere in any state for Joseph. There is one Joseph in PA but it is not the same
one. 1840 census lists Joseph Cairns (50-60 years old) female (50-60 years old) and one
female (10-15 years old). In Madison Township. Don't know who this female could be.
In 1820 census here is a Richard Cairns in Zanesville, Muskingum Ohio. He is listed
between 26 and 44. There is also a female 16-25 and a female 26-44. I believe this Richard
is somehow related to Joseph--possibly a brother. In 1816 Zanesville tax list there is an
Andrew Cairns and a Lewis Cairns--don't know who they are.
Joseph's will written August 14, 1840 and entered into court June 16, 1855. from Anne
Dallas Budd's "Abstracts. To son Robert, one half estate, including southwest
corner section 36, township 22, range 19. To daughter Harriet Irwin, one half estate.
Executors: son Robert Cairns; daughter Harriet Irwin. A codicil (don't know date)
land and money to grandaughter Mary Jane Irwin, to daughter Harriet McLaughlin--land.
F.H. Wise witnessed codicil. Interestingly there is a Wise relation living with Harry
Milton Cairns in 1900.
Originally buried in old cemetary at corner of East First and Adams Streets and later
moved to new Mansfield Cemetary where he is buried about 100 feet indside of main gate,
along east side of driveway.
Fought in War of 1812--Was listed as a captain Dec. 12, 1812-April 12, 1813 3rd Regiment
(CASS') Ohio VOLS and MILITIA. Muster rolls indicate rank indiuction as Lieutenant
and discharge as Captain. Dismissed Feb. 1814.think in 3rd regiment (Cass') Ohio
Volunteers and militia. Rank induction lieutenant and discharge as captain.
Captain Joseph CairnsIs listed in the War of 1812 Prisoner of War Records as being in the
27th Regiment and taken prisoner at Detroit now subject to the disabilities ????
(incurred) by that ???? (capitulation?). From military records. Don't know if same but
believe so.
In document Records of Men elinsted in the US Army Prior to the Peace Establishment, May
17, 1815 Joseph Ciarns listed as Captain in Infantry. In remarks section is written the
following: RRs Janesville, Ohio May 12 June 22/13, Present--Taken prisoner at Detroit.
Formerly belonged to the 3 Ohio Vols. This must be the same one because it is Hull's
surrender

can't find Joseph Cairns in 1830--
Joseph Cairns (0.) Capt 27. infy 20 May '13 : dismd. 18 Feb. '14.
He may be related to a Richard Cairns who is listed in military records and who is also
listed as family head in the 1820 Muskingum Ohio (Zanesville) census. This is where
Joseph came to Mansfield from. Richards family included 1 free white male 26-44, 1 free
white female 26-44, 1 free white female 16-25. Richard was a private in the 3 reg't
(Cass') , Ohio Vols. and Militia for War of 1812. Same as Joseph. Also a John in the
same regiment. In US Army uS Marshals Returns of Enemy Alkiens and Prisoners of War
1812-1815 Part II, Richard Cairns listed. Richard Cairns is a Private and Joseph is a
Lieutenant in Capt. William Raynold's co April 12, 1812-April 13, 1813. Another one
lists roll of capt. Joseph cairns co and Joseph cairns is captain and Richard Cairns is
Corp. from Dec 12, 1812 to April 12, 1813
Muskingum tax lists for 1816 include a Lewis Cairns and an Andrew Cairns
Richard and John Cairns listed in 1820 Zanesville Township
In 1830 Joseph Cairns is in Columbus, Franklin County Ohio. in court records "William
Downye vs. Joseph Cairns, et al. In chancery to correct error. Filed 5-11-1830. On
9-1-1819 Joseph Cairns then of Mansfield, now of Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio sold
in-lot 128 Mansfield to John McLinchy, late of Mansfield who died 11-27-1826 leaving as
his heirs: John, William, Michael, and Nancy McLinchey, all of Richland Co. and all
minors.
History of Richland County Ohio: Mrs. Mary E Cline owns a valuable tract of land,
comprising one hundred and sixty acres, situatied on section 36, Jackson township, and in
the management of this displays excellent business ability. Mrs. Cline was born on the
farm where she now resides, Oct 22, 1844, a daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Gordon)
Cairns. The former was born in Mansfield, Richland County, Feb 15, 1815 and wqas a son of
Richard and Harriet Cairns. (This is not right--Joseph). The grandfather was a native of
Ireland and was a sea captain, while the grandmother was born in England and had been
previously married. Her first husband bore the name of Wilson and by him she had three
daughters. Following his demise she gave her hand in marriage to Richard (should be
Joseph) Cairns. Upon their emigration to American they at one made their way to Richland
County, Ohio where they spent their remaining days. Their family numbered three children:
Robert, Joseph and Harriet Mc!
Laughlin. (This is probably not correct.)
There is a John Swindler who posted the following: Interested in information on
family/descendants of Joseph and Harriet Cairns who immigrated from Ireland about 1801 and
naturalized in Cumberland County, PA Sept 7, 1808. Harriet died in Pittsburg in Jan 1880.
Daughter Ann Cairns married George Matthews in Caqrlisle, PA on Nov 14, 1823, moved to
Pittsburg PA circa 1832 and is buried in Allegheny Cemetery, Pitts. Pa. Can't find
documentation of connection but there might be.
Later John Swindler writes: I got lucky and found a death certificate in City of
Pittsburgh records for Harriet Cairns widow of Joseph Cairns with birth listed as 1785 in
Ireland. Suspect Joseph and Harriet were living in Carlisle, PA about 1825 when daughter
Ann Cairns married George Matthews. George and Ann moved to Pittsburgh about 1830 and when
their daughter Annie Matthews married Joseph Roush, they named their first son Joseph
Cairns Roush (1860).
Later from John: I have Harriet Cairns in Pittsburgh in 1870's as widow of Joseph
Cairns according to Pittsburgh City directories. No other Cairns shows up in earlier city
directories so she probably moved to Pittsburgh after death of husband Joseph. Her place
of birth was Ireland in 1785 according to 1880 City of Pittsburgh death certificate. She
is buried in Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
