Hi Linda, I have some information that may help:
If you look in the 1900 census again, you will note that living with Fanny Cains is Robert
and Jennie Salsbury. Those are her parents. They are also the parents of Mary Salsbury
who married William Henry Cains, who has a brother, Hiram Jr. I have been researching the
William Henry Cains side, and noticed the deceased ?Mr. Cains? absent in the 1900 census.
Yours is the first I have seen suggesting a relation between Fanny and Hiram.
Some things about Hiram Cains: The Hiram that married Luverna 'Summers' in 1872,
is found in the 1880 census with his wife 'Leuverna', and 2 children. I don't
think the kids were actually his, as he is listed as 31, wife 27, and kids age 13 and 4.
According to the census, the 13 year old child was a girl named George Alle
Cane....(didn't sound feminine to me), the other, a boy named Gilbert B Canes. The
writing on the 13 year old is hard to read, but does really appear to read as transcribed.
Hiram's brother ,James and his wife Martha had a child named Gilbert B,whose date of
birth matches that of the one listed with Hiram and Luverna. The census was taken about a
week apart, so I think Gilbert may have been staying with Hiram and Luverna. I have no
clues on the other child.
Hiram and Luverna are found in the 1900 and 1910 censuses also, living alone. Both records
support a marriage of 1872. 1910 says Luverna had given birth to one child, but that child
was no longer alive. It also says her marriage to Hiram was her second marriage.
Luverna's death certificate says she was born 25 july 1849 and died 26 jan 1929 and
was the child of Samuel Johnson and Eliza Slusher. It was witnessed by Jack Short. In
1933, Hiram died, only his name is listed as Robert, widower, formerly married to Vernie
Johnson. In 1930 census, this Robert, is shown widowed, living with his son-in-law, Jack
Short. Jack's wife, Lucy, (Robert's suppossed daughter) would have presumably
been born in 1891, as she was 39 at that time.
It really creates more questions than it answers, such as if Lucy was their daughter, why
the 1910 census wouldn't reflect her as living? But it does all seem to fit that
Luverna Johnson prior to her marriage to Hiram Robert married someone with the last name
of Summers.
But I think it's safe to say Fanny did not marry Hiram. There was a brother of Hiram
that I had not been able to find much information about... Harmon Caines.... who was born
about 1858....I wondered if he could have married Fanny? Harmon is close to Hiram and
sometimes the names were interchanged. Searching the names of Fanny's children, I
found a death record of Jamie (James) Caines on 19 Dec 1915 (born 14 May 1886) which list
his parents as Harmon Cains and Fanny Salsbury!!! I was unable to find death records for
any of the other children listed in the 1900 census, or for Harmon himself, but I think
this may be enough evidence to support their relationship. Hope this is helpful! -Shyloh
