Hi everyone,
I'm a new subscriber to this list and I'm researching the CAINES of
Hazelbury Bryan, Dorset, England. Variant spellings include CAIN, CAINE,
CAINS, KAYNES and KEYNES, depending on historical period and exact locality.
In other words how the Parish Clerk thought it should be spelt.
CAINES have been living in and around Hazelbury Bryan continuously at least
since the inception of Parish Registers in 1538. As with many Dorset
families emigration was to play a significant part in their lives. In the
family unit of interest to me two brothers, Robert and Abel, emigrated to
Toronto, Canada around 1834. Robert married Honor THORN there in 1837 and I
have no more information on him or his descendants. Abel married Mary
Elizabeth CROOKS around the same time, probably in Niagara, and they had
seven children. He later married Harriet LEE by whom he had a further six
children. Mary Elizabeth and Harriet were cousins, supposedly related to
Robert E. LEE.
Three of Abel's sons by his first marriage, William W., Albert Edward and
Daniel Cobb, fought in the Civil War. William was killed at Knoxville but
Albert and Daniel survived to live full lives.
I have details of Abel's descendants through to the present day but I am
primarily concerned with the 18th C families and earlier generations living
in Dorset. I should be very pleased to exchange information on either side
of the pond.
