Message Board Post:
My GGGG-Grandfather, Abel Cain, came into Ohio in the late 1700s. He is somehow related to
Walter Cain Sr & Jr. I found court records in Brooke Co, VA (WV) for them and also in
Jefferson Co, OH. There was a group of early settlers that came into OH prior to receiving
permission from the government and were evicted back across the river.
I first heard of this through family legend but there are records. I don't know who
Abel's first wife was, she may have been Indian. He only had one child, Samuel, with
her. Samuel was my GGG-Grandfather and is buried in the old Hoskinsville Cem. with wife,
Elizabeth Neely. Abel & second wife, Hannah Cable raised their family in Coshocton Co,
OH before moving on to Iroquois Co, IL. Walter Cain operated a ferry across the Ohio river
near Steubenville in Jefferson Co, OH. Some of the other surnames from early Hoskinsville
were Reed, Geary, Pickenpaugh & Willey. Abel earned a living transporting goods to New
Orleans by way of the Ohio & Mississippi rivers. Family legend also says they were
involved with surveying and laying out early roads but I haven't found anything
concrete about that.
Abel was born in 1774 and died in 1850 in Iroquois Co, IL so the following record (if
connected) would have to be his grandfather & father.
